I charge 3% on top of all transactions made with a card at my shop. They chArge me for it. With profit margins so slim because of Internet sales on like items..it could eat a large chunk of our profit. Say a purchase is $2000, if I got to pay to run it on a card...that's $200 if fees to run the card, because they don't ask if it's the pre tax amount. So I pay the 3% on $2000 and 7% for the sales tax. And people wonder why you can cut such a better deal if you pay with cash. They think their debit card and cash are the same thing...well there's no fee on "in god we trust" what I don't have to pay in fees, I can pass that savings along to the
Customer.
I think charging a surcharge is going to hurt business. People will opt out of using your store/shop. In the current economy people are dependant on CC due to job loss and/or other reasons. I think it will force people to shop online even more so resulting in brick and mortar stores to struggle. Accepting VISA and MC I think brings more business in the store than it turns away business. Gotta spend money to make money.
Let's be honest here, how many stores would pass a cash savings onto the customer paying in cash? I don't see it.
EDIT: Not sure how you charge your 3% but, It might help business to show your rates with the 3% already added with a "save 3% if paying in cash" line in there.
wait am i reading you guys correctly? i'm going to be charge a surcharge if i use my debit card where the money is instantly deducted from my bank account? wtf? why don't they just call it a middle man fee?

The retailer already can give a "discount" or charge a fee if you use a credit card
In most states there is no LAW that you cant charge to accept a credit card
The only thing that limits retailers is the card acceptance agreement with the credit card companies... Where the whole its "illegal to charge extra for credit card use" customers say.... Well no... Its not "illegal" if you don't like it call the credit card companies and complain.. See if they drop the retailer
If they make it clear that retailers can pass on the cost of processing to customers the banks/credit card companies will need to adapt. Imagine a sign
1% Visa
2.5% Mastercard
6% American Express
American Express will need to drop the rate they charge the retailer to prevent people from dropping them.
I worked a company breifly many moons ago. The name is FDMS. Click here to see how it works http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/sma.../order-21.html
Basically its a middle man between the merchant and banks. They charge the merchants a fee for every credit card transaction. Merchants have always wanted to charge consumers a fee due to this but I think its bs seeing that it should be a cost of offering that service.
My DR office charges you a $1 surcharge for paying your co-pay with a card.
Alot of corner stores, take out restaurants, etc imposses a minimum for credit card use to limit their fees from the processing company.
