    Green thumbs anyone?

So I just recently started my square foot gardening venture. It's actually quite an exciting hobby, everyday when I get home from work I go to check on my plants to see whats new. It's crazy how plants live. I'm just in awe at how quickly they grow and their habits from the day to the night. During the day they stretch out and come nightfall some decide to close up shop.

Anyone else garden here? If not you should try it out, best thing is you get to eat it later.

my mom has a small garden, three tomato plants, three pepper plants and three of something else i forget. A damn rabbit keeps getting to it though even through the chicken wire fence around it.

We used to grow our own green beans back in the day, they were way bigger and tastier than the ones at the grocery store.

Did you read in the news lately that they discovered why homegrown tomatoes are sweeter than the ones found at the grocery store?

omg I cant wait till I can set up my own.

Even though it isn't the most expensive hobby, Ive only been in my house since March and I still have rennovations and things to do and being out of work, until I find work, and get the house squared away, no hobbies for me lol.

Growing up, we always had fresh strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley etc.

      I loved it.

oh they just mistakenly "switched" that feature off when they were modifying the tomato plant to be able to survive a truck drive to the store.

Oh another thing i have noticed that people are starting to do now if they have a garden, instead if using the garden hose to water their stuff, they collect rainwater from the downspout on a house when it rains.

Yea so far all I've done is plant and water them and I love it. I have two 4' x 4' x 10" deep boxes, plan on making more boxes in February to start the spring off with a bang.

haha nice. It's truly amazing how many different varieties of tomatoes they have. The purple ones are nuts. We just planted some pumpkin seeds, she wants to grow our own halloween pumpkins. Yea I thought about a rain barrel but instead I just installed a drip irrigation system this past weekend.

Ya I also need to do some planting in the front yard.

The previous owners made a shrubbery nightmare in the front entrance way.....good for privacy but its hard to see at night when you pull up, who if anyone, is lurking by the front door etc.

I want to remove a lot of the bs shrubs, and then replant colorful perrenials so I don't have to do much more afterwards.

We have a Japanese maple tree that will be staying, though.

I definitely know what you mean about shrubs/bushes. This fall I'll probably back a truck up my lawn and rip everything out. I can't stand the cluttered look.

That is exactly what I would do lol.

Unfortunately I have two tree's that present problems so I got a quote for $400 for removal of two trees, 4 or 5 bushes, removing two 3 ft high brush piles(that I made while trimming and pruning when we moved in) and grinding stumps!

                  Not bad.

I garden every season. Have beans, snap peas, corn, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, all kinds of peppers, carrots, eggplant, cucumber, onions, garlic, herbs, etc..

You name it, I grow it(nothing illegal)

My garden is 25x15 and is a dedicated space for gardening.

You need feedback on something, or is this for conversation/sharing?

My wife cans all kinds of shit and we make tons of stuff from scratch. Spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, salsa, jelly/jams, Candied jalepenos, seasonings-literally all kinds of awesome stuff.

You should get a Scarecrow sprinkler and record the results.

I need to get going on my yard. I have gardens in the front and on the side, but they're pretty much done. My friend has been working on them for me, since I hate yardwork, and he enjoys it.

I dated a girl last year that was really into composting. Kinda weird... but compost can make for some awesome fertilizer.

Deer are the enemy! They are like giant rats that will devour your entire garden if you dont watch out(at least around here where I live).

I live in town and we aren't supposed to discharge firearms within city limits. i've been in this house for almost 4 years and deer are SO bad now its crazy. since no one can legaly shoot them on this hill where we used to have 4-6 we probably have 24 now.

If you like to cook the LEAST you should grow is some commonly used herbs. Such as rosemary and basil. They smell so freaking good, can be grown indoors year round and cost a assload at the store for the fresh "organic" type.

we mainly do squash, tomatoes, beans, and melons. Also a LOT of herbs.

They make deer-repellant spray. Smells like ass, but it works. Apparently, cayenne pepper works well also. Just sprinkle some powdered pepper around your plants. Won't hurt the plants, but deer stay away.

Or you could just learn how to shoot a bow.

Leung, just burry the chicken wire about 4"-6" inches into the soil, this will deter them and only the REALLY nasty ones will dig deep enough to get under it.
I know, I've had rabbits and a garden... they go VERY well together.

But yes, I garden. Growing your own food is cheap and fun. lol
