"dead language" means nobody actively communicates in spoken Latin. It does not mean we don't have a thorough understanding of how the language works, and how the words are pronounced. In fact, Latin usage and pronunciation is pretty much set in stone. Since the language is no longer used in everyday communication by ANYBODY, it is no longer evolving. Latin is a finite language.
There's no excuse for the their/there/they're issues, break/brake, to/too/two, or your/you're they a used often enough everywhere. Per se is not used often, and like you said is used by people that are intelligent, even if the most common form is misspelled. Oh and thanks for calling me intelligent.
to/too I can understand to a point, simply as a typo... but a smart person proofreads what they write! Sometimes such things are missed, but re-reading what you just wrote prevents a good deal of it.
I re-read and edit almost everything I type on here, and on Facebook (and Facebook just updated their post-editing feature. It's great now!)

You've been able to edit posts for quite a while now....all you had to do was click the x immediately after posting and it would delete it and then paste what you had wrote into the post box so you could change it and re-post.
Yeah, but the ability to edit was only there RIGHT after you posted. Wait 10 seconds, and it will only let you delete your post. Click away, same thing.
Now, you can edit anything you typed at any time!
I wish life had a "mute point". I took English in college (damn prerequisites) and I learned a lot of bad grammar that gets used in daily life that we may or may not realize until we're reminded. The word complexion bothers me, probably because it's spelled ALMOST how it sounds?? I don't know, but it bothers me.
I saw something on Facebook, they took the word "ghoti" and said, according to the English language, it should be pronounced "fish". Here's why: How can "ghoti" and "fish" sound the same? GBS explained it like this:
the gh = f as in rouGH
the o = i as in wOmen
the ti = sh as in naTIon
I blame the lack of proper grammar and punctuation used by MOST of today's youth on cell phone texting and Facebook. Son of a bitch! People have gotten so lazy, er go... shit, I lost my train of thought.
I'm pretty sure I've said this exact thing before, about this exact same topic. Facebook and texting are no excuse. I went through the same amount of schooling and classes as the majority of us. Granted, I graduated with a 3.8, but I; A) didn't retain any of it. And, B) didn't have schooling after high school. Blaming "society", social media, forms of communication or lack of time is not excusable. Most pieces of equipment these days (computers and phones) have auto correct or T9 or some sort of spell correct. You type a word the way you THINK it's spelled, it corrects you and you make note. "Oh, that's how it's spelled!". People just don't give a shit. THATS the real problem.
I like helping people on here when I actually know, or feel like researching; although, when I read something and have no clue where one thought starts and the other ends, I don't even bother.
PUNCTUATION IS KEY
It doesn't take rocket science to know how to use a period or a comma. If you're unsure where to put a comma, just toss in a period. At least show some kind of effort in your sentence structures. We don't want to read a 5 page run on sentence.
This. I have a few friends, on Facebook, who have, and use, no concept of punctuation. It's hard, literally and figuratively, to read their posts because they're my friends and I think highly of them, but their lack of punctuation makes me wanna slap them, lol.

Eh, maybe on the typo part. When I'm typing, I'm pretty aware of the words I'm typing and try to think them out before typing. I think a lot of people don't know, or forget, that "too" means "also" or "as well". Like, "I want ice cream too!". I think people overlook it so often that it's use and definition is forgotten.
Or when people don't, or don't correctly, pluralize possession. Like Jones'. That pluralization of names ending in "s". I mess it up sometimes, too.
One of my pet peeves is not capitalizing "I" or the first letter of a sentence. I hate when I see that I missed one. I will edit a post for something like that, lol.
All-in-all, I don't think there are excuses. Between the education that we all got and the internet, there's no excuse. If I'm unsure how to spell a word, I'll Google that bitch, lol.
I now also only have my tablet. And if you've ever used one, you know where I'm coming from, lol. This thing is a little difficult to use and the auto correct/spell check/word selector is often times off, lol. I now have to double check my posts not only for my own errors but to make sure my tablet picked the proper words, lol.
