    Well got another tough decision...

ok. last year in August i got a promotion from shift manager to Assistant Manager. but in order for me to have got that position, i had to relocated to Wake Forest, NC. me and my g/f are still together and very much in love as well. but only i could move down there. due to her job and the kids and their dad being in town. she wont have to worry about a baby sitter.

well now its almost May of 2012. i pay $535/month in rent at my new place. my electric bill is between $64-145 a month. then my internet is about $45-50. but since i got a new(newer than a CB. '01 accord) car, money got a little tight. but before i got the car tho, i wasnt really able to enjoy the extra money i was making. it basicly went to rent and i was making what i was making before. just the extra cash went to rent and my other 2 bills.

so ive been thinking about moving back to my g/f place. here we pay no rent. all we have is the electric, internet, cell phone bill, and the satellite TV bill. if i were to move back in with her, im saving $720-740 a month. but id have to drive back and forth an hour and 15min to work 5 days a week.

ok. so pros and cons of me moving back:

    PROS:
    -im saving at LEAST $720
-that means ill be able to save more money instead of use the money i have left over from bills as gas and food money.
-ill be with my woman again
-ill get an hour and 15min of driving time(that i LOVE to do) in the CG.
-with extra money i can improve on the house we're in now so its more....comfortable.

    CONS:
-its an hour and 15min to get to work.
-mileage on the car(im not too concerned about that because im VERY strict on maintenance).
-my availability at work will not change. so i still have to work a 10hr day. so my 10hr days turn into 12-13hr days because of the drive there and back.
    5
Move back and save the money

stay where i am and try a balance...

    no way to mass transit?

    car pool?

id rather go for the drive...sure you lose a few hours out of your day...but would you rather have money or the comfort of living close to work?

no mass transit here in NC. unless its inner city. that extra money would be nice to get my finances back in order and get my credit back.

and i asked my 2 managers about it and they said they wouldnt because of the drive. well neither of them are car enthusiast like i am. they get a car just to drive from A-B. i get to a car to enjoy the drive between A and B. lol.

My buddy Dennis and my other friends dad commutes everyday from home to philly air port. 1.5 to 2 hr drive.

After a while u get used to it and or find shorter routes which cut them down to 1hr 20min drive.

The math checks out on this as long as you're okay with the length of the drive and time lost that could be applied toward other things. In case you're wondering here's what I did.

          70mph(assumed)x1.25hours=87.5mi.x2=175mi.(trip length)

          175mi/30mpg(assumed fuel economy)=5.83(gallons/trip)

          5.83x5(work days of the week)*4.2(weeks in a month factor)=122.5gal/mon

122.5*$4(average price per gallon of 87 gasoline and being conservative here)=$490/month.

          $720-490=$230

But, if you're living rent-free then that means you're living on someone else's dime. If that's the case then you can't really consider it a permanent arrangement and it would be in your best interest to keep your options open.

Any chance that you'll be living in Fuquay-Varina?

yea if its me , im taking the drive. i drove an hour+ each way when i was in college / living with and taking care of my grandfather, and i honestly didnt find it a hinderence at all other than having to wake up an hour earlier and get home an hour later. gives you a chance to kind of sit back, enjoy some music and just roll with it.

in my current situation i commute 30 minutes each way to work everyday. i love putting the crx on the highway and just cruising with the windows cracked and the fresh air intake on in the mornings.

having an absorbent amount of extra finances available will help lots too if youre finding yourself in a tighter financial situation than youd like, and being back in with the woman is a nice bonus to the whole thing

the mileage between me and my g/f place in Roanoke Rapids and my job in Wake Forest is actually 66 miles if i take back roads and 74 if i take the highways. i get at LEAST 380-400 miles out of a tank of gas.

my last max gas mileage was 33mpg. thats with me just cruising. which i do now. lol.

gas down here is 3.74-3.97/gallon down here. and with the exhaust and intake i plan on putting on the car, my gas mileage will increase. not a butt-load, but enough for my pocket to notice. lol. im always about checking gas mileage on the vehicle i drive. i found out i get at LEAST 100 miles out of a 1/4 tank.

with gas at 3.85/gal, $45 gave me between 3/4 and a full tank. ill only have to fill up at LEAST once at the beginning of the week. i get paid every other week. my credit card will be used on nothing but gas, so that wont be an issue.

I agree with Jarrett, even though we all live our lives by assumption everyday you can't assume that rent free will last forever. As well as the gas prices. With that said, I think it might be best to stay put and visit her on the weekends or every other weekend or something. Maybe you go stay with her one weekend and she come to you the next.

Distance does one of two things for a relationship, it either makes the heart grow fonder or makes the heart go wander. Been with my girl for 7 years and for 1.5 of the 7 years she lived in Florida while I lived in Virginia, all due to our jobs.

Gas prices have been rumored to go up significantly this summer which is why I tacked a little bit more on there.

What's the situation with the girlfriend? I know you've been together for quite a while, which is good. Are you thinking long-term? If so, then I'd say driving an extra hour+ each way would be worth being around to cultivate that relationship.
What's with the place you'll be staying in? Is it a house your girlfriend owns, or is it owned by someone else (family, for instance)? If it's hers, then occupying, improving, and maintaining that home is a worthwhile investment if the relationship is expected to be permanent.

Also, you're still at a fairly low level in the management chain. This job is an hour away from where you want to live, but how long will you be there? You could get promoted and relocated to a closer store. You could find another job using this management experience to further yourself in a different company.

If you don't mind the drive, and you have something worth staying around for with the girlfriend, then I say move back Then put your efforts into improving your work situation by trying to move it closer. Tolerate the drive as long as you have to, but don't accept it as a permanent situation until you've exhausted all other options (and that's pretty much impossible to do... there are ALWAYS other options!)

understandable. because me and the g/f have grown closer together during these months ive been living down there. but it has also grown a little speculation in her about me being faithful. and i dont want that to grow anymore than what it is. i want it gone.

i see why you did that. but id rather go on actual fact instead of rumors. lol. im very exacting when it comes to my car. lol. i work everything down to the last cent.

i even calculate how much gas ill have after i put in $10 of the $25 i have left in my pocket and how long it'll last me. i reset my odometer every time put even the smallest amount of gas in. from $5-25. just to see how much gas i get out of it.

ill say we've picked out the ring she'll be getting soon. lol. so i think its a long term thing. haha.

the place she's staying now(and where we we're living since i moved to NC) is her ex's fathers place. he's been letting us stay her and doesnt mind us being here either. its completely paid for. i dont want to stay here for too much longer tho. this neighborhood is crap.

the job situation? well im the assistant manger. not the assistant to the assistant manger. im the guy right under the store manager. and they're training me to be a store manager. and im hoping to get the job of the store manager up here where i was a shift manager at. but it's some hard work tho.

as far as options. well i do have my friend thats the store manager at Little Caesar's. i could get a job there and work up to be a store manager. but that means a good while being flat broke. something im trying to avoid.

Jarrett FYI you should only take the delta from what he is currently paying in gas vs what he will be paying (unless he lives at his work) since he is already paying his gas now, the extra cost would only be the change in the cost.

I think commuting is always a good option if it is really feasible. With more mileage on your car, comes more frequent maintenance. But also comes the benefit of seeing your girl more often. Every job I have ever had but 2 I have had a commute about an hour each way to work and do not mind it. (I call it my relaxing time)

True, but with a lack of information I was assuming enough already as it was.
