I just recently contacted a engine importer about an H23A VTEC and they replied that they had two and neither of them would turn. He said he'd do a special price on them (both complete motors) which turned out to be $750. Now I wouldn't pay that unless one or both of them had PDE heads, which I doubt they do. But given that the cranks and pistons in these are fairly one-off repairing the potential problems here could be very difficult, what would you pay? I'm thinking since I'm already getting a replacement F22A to get this non-running car I bought running again, I have time to play with. But I would just like a few more opinions from others before I throw an unreasonable counteroffer back at him.

Idk man..I wouldn't take it. $750 is a huge gamble on two motors that won't turn.Henry R

The engine here is a H23A1, non-VTEC, sooooooooo, Yeah, that's a hefty gamble, my vote is no.Last edited by dj_ender; 01-18-2012, 01:11 AM.Originally posted by Mishakol129Do not disrespect my intelligence. I would hope to not have to replace pistons. Doing so with that motor is next to impossible unless I ordered pistons from Honda of Japan. Same thing with the crankshaft. I may be willing to do $500 though it still seems on the high end given the uncertainty. If one of them had a PDE head I'd do it in a heartbeat. And yes, I'm intimately familiar with what's involved in rebuilding a motor. I'm merely asking from a value standpoint what people would pay for this.My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!

honestly IMHO h23a1's are garbage ( im not sure if that applies to the vtec model though ). ive never seen a non vtec last over 275k-300k. their cranks suck, their rods are nice, the heads are give and take. honestly i would rather buy an h22 and do a mild build rather than invest over half an h22 to be playing legos for months trying to get one motor out of 3 shit ones you then would be in possession of.

I don't know if I give any credence to the "held to a higher standard" argument but the H23A VTEC crankshaft has 55mm mains. So in a replacement sense it's not the same as an F22A crankshaft. The only other motor I can possibly think of that would use this crank would possibly be DOHC F22B engines made after '97. And that's just a shot in the dark.
But to say an H23A1 crankshaft sucks is a little unjustified. And just so we're clear, these motors are not USDM H23A1 motors. They're H23A VTEC blue top motors that make 197hp.My Members' Ride Thread - It's a marathon build, not a sprint. But keep me honest on the update frequency!
