Its sad that it took Hyundai to make a CRX like car

I just saw a couple in person... Its a smaller car in person.. (then typical modern cars)

Its Elantra based with an Accent based motor

    But its basically a
    light car (by modern standards)
    cheap 17k
    fwd
    underpowered
    supposed to handle well

So almost a modern CRX type car...

I am excluding the CRZ b/c its a hybrid..

If it was RWD Genesis coupe based I would get one..

So underpowered and gas is ok, but underpowered and hybrid is bad?

Mostly because it could of been a much better car. It had potential . CRX was underpowered to... It was just light and handled well. But it was a death trap and could never be made these days. Plus I put that part to piss people off ...lol

Elantra based with an Accent motor? They should have made it Accent based with an Elantra motor!

According to Wikipedia, it does have a 208hp turbo motor as an option (for the 2013 model). The other weaklings are 128 and 138... barely more than my Fit.

The weak models boast 40mpg, which puts it in direct competition with the CR-Z, only without the hybrid stuff (which would honestly make it more appealing to me... I don't want to pay to fix a hybrid!)

I think it's cool. Then again, I'm a big Hyundai fan. They're REALLY stepping up, and every model shows it. They still have lots of things to improve upon, and none of their cars seem to hit the mark directly... but they're aiming quite high, and getting pretty damn close with every release.

Its like 120ish hp.. Accent like motor.. 6 speed manual trans option. I am sure at some it will get to 2.0t that a bunch of Hyundai's are getting at this post.

RWD with a 2.0t would make the car amazing.. A more practical Genesis... I cant understand why they didn't go with the Genesis chassis.. The coupe is only slightly more expensive and it comes with the 2.0t.. If they offered the same motor the price would still be close and they would put a car in a market that would have zero competition.

Hyundai certainly did their homework, though.

They followed the lead of Honda and Toyota, and created reliable, affordable, efficient, reasonably attractive cars in the Elantra (Civic and Corolla) and Sonata (Accord and Camry). They used those models to build their reputation, and get their name out.
The Accent competed with the Echo and Yaris, and now the Fit (which is a better car... but honestly, I don't doubt that an Accent would hold up to the abuse I've given the Fit either...)
The Tiburon competed with the Prelude and Celica... but not very well. Hyundai proved they could make a really nice looking sporty car that can't do a damn thing.

NOW, Hyundai has released the Genesis Coupe, which does more than people realize. 1) the V6 is a reasonable competitor to the 370z (not as good, but good enough to be considered competition.) 2) the turbo 4 brings us something we have always been denied (at least since the S12 ceased production)... it's a damn Silvia! Hyundai has also very clearly suggested that the turbo model was designed with modification in mind...

The Genesis Sedan and Equus offer a level of luxury that approaches that of the Lexus GS and LS. Maybe not quite at that level, but pretty damn close... and for a good deal less.

Now they're offering a CRX in the Veloster... a much loved car from days past that Honda only partially resurrected with the CR-Z. People who want a small, chuckable, efficient, underpowered hatchback to screw around with... that don't want to deal with crazy hybrid technology... well, they now have it. And it comes turbo, for the people that don't feel like modifying anything.

If they went with the Genesis platform, they'd be cannibalizing their own sales. This thing is lodged somewhere between the Accent and Elantra, and offers a sportiness not offered by either of those cars. Essentially, it's exactly what the CRX was.

I do agree that Hyundai could do wonders by offering another, cheaper RWD car, though. The Genesis is a big car. If they offered something smaller, lighter, and more nimble... even if underpowered... basically, an AE86 idea... I know Toyota and Subaru are releasing something similar, but Hyundai could let the hype for that car build a demand for a new design.

You can hardly see the 3rd door on the passenger side, looks really nice actually! I honestly hated the design when I first saw pictures when I still had my Tiburon, but these honestly changed my mind lol

Looks good in person... They had a red, white and black one...

                            The red one looked amazing.

I have no doubts that it is a very nice machine for the price. But to look at it from a straight-line-acceleration point of view, it has power-to-weight ratio and 1/4 mile performance similar to that of a DX CB7 with a stock A6 motor.

The aggressive styling screams "I look faster than I really am". I would be a little embarrassed to be driving that without having some power to match the aggressive look. But then again I drive a car that looks like a 16-year-old's car.
