Ive been sleeping on my metal futon for about a year now and i have no problems falling asleep or staying asleep. The mattress needs help but I don't wake up sore or anything. I actually feel good when i wake up after sleeping regardless if it was on the sofa or on that cheap metal futon.

I wouldnt go for one of those desk on bottom, bed on top things. They look childish to me.

i'd get a bunk bed, take out the underside to put like a desk or something and just sleep up top
        for example
My friend had one of those. Ceiling clearance was a bit of an issue. He was ok with it... but the man was certainly not getting any ass in that thing! (he bought an inflatable mattress to put on the floor for that... )

I slept on one kinda like that a few months ago. Very comfortable.

My friend (former roommate) used to have an old Walmart cheapie futon. That thing was so crazy uncomfortable. He didn't mind it, but I could barely sit on it. I couldn't imagine sleeping on it!

I was soo used to sleeping on futon beds during high school and part of my college years that it felt weird to me when I slept on a real bed. The mattress that i have now isn't the greatest because those things are soo expensive brand new. But id like to have something more firm.

How ever when you get some ass on a futon bed, you don't need to worry about bed squeaks.

I go from sleeping on a futon, couch, to bed. I prefer the bed but its such a long walk to it at night haha. I have a metal one and it isn't too bad though. If you get on Groupon or keep an eye out, they sell $50 twin mattresses all the time.

              FALSE

Freshman year in the dorm next to mine there was a GIGANTIC crashing sound at about 1 AM. When we checked to see what was up, the guy was on the floor, under a blanket with a girl, and the futon was decimated.

Buy a quality wood frame or you'll end up like this guy.
