According to Wikipedia, the most common turbo manufacturers are:

      ABB Turbo Systems
      BorgWarner Turbo Systems
Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (Joint Venture of Bosch and Mahle)
      Caterpillar
      Cummins Turbo Technologies (Holset)
Hitachi Warner Turbo Systems (Joint Venture of Hitachi and BorgWarner)
Honeywell Turbo Technologies (previously Garrett AiResearch)
      IHI Corporation
      Komatsu
      MAN Diesel
      Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
      NAPIER Turbochargers
Turbo Energy Ltd (Joint venture of Borg warner and Brakes India)
      Voith Turbo

The most common ones (that I've seen used in mainstream automotive products) are in bold.

There are many options, but the best choice is to pick an option that is widely used, with repair information and parts readily accessible.

Apparently. I wasn't aware of it either, but it looks like it happened a few years ago.

I like the sound of hitachi warner. do not believe they make anything large.
found on audi tt, mazdaspeed 6.

i hear airwerks bw. are somewhat high tech. billet perhaps ti internals.
found on gt2, 911 turbos'. some models being variable geomatry.

are garett are worthwhile option. especially for twin, or sequential setup. are they budget line not so dependable?

yes avo are also an option.

I want technology, budget, price, reliability, power.
                  basically everything.

aiming for usable power i can keep my foot pressed down with confidence.
easily start sliding and power through corners. must be faster than your typical gt car which is typically a 400hp 4.3 v8.

perhaps i dial in 400hp and see how it handles as my car is a lot lighter than the competition I"m thinking of.

what manufacturer would you choose in 2011. for forced induction.
                  also considering hi flow oem...

I've always known Garrett to be very high quality. They don't even sell directly to the general public (at least to my knowledge. I don't know if the Honeywell takeover changed that.)

Since you're talking about reliability and output... what car/engine are you building? What turbo(s) you choose may depend largely on the car, engine, intended use, target powerband, and budget.

My Eunos Cosmo 13b only car I actually modify.
I don't plan on going a large single turbo.

                      there's enough garett workshops though.
I don't work on this car myself. even though i have whats basically a free mechanic living in my garage atm.

Wow, that's a pretty uncommon car! If you have someone else working on it for you, i would definitely check to see what they know best.

I know my mechanic is a garett dealer.
                          they typically do rx8 turbo's for 300kw.
I'm fairly sure they would steer me in that direction.

do i get more value for money doing a borg warner or go out on a limb and chase a hitachi.
i only like hitachi because it would be un uprated oem spec.

If your mechanic is the one that will be working on your car, and he sells Garrett... I would go with Garrett over any other brand. Let him steer you in the right direction, and use what he knows well. It's fortunate that you have a mechanic that's familiar with turbo rotaries!
