    Professionals with gauged ears?

Well I am about to finish my first full year in a nursing program and I have 00 gauged ears, and am thinking of taking them out for good before going into my second year. After this coming year I can get my associate degree RN. I always wear my 0g skin colored silicone plugs in clinicals (at the hospital) and sometimes when I'm in class. So you can't really tell I have gauged ears most of the time, but this got me wondering what others thought about professionals with gauged ears. I would like to hear your opinions.

I wouldn't want a nurse/doctor to have gauged ears. I say lose em.

Based soley on the fact that most people judge you within the first 3 seconds of meeting you, I say take them out.

I was trying to ask more of what people think of professionals with gauged ears, but your responses pretty much let me know what you think of that. I am really leaning towards taking them out. It is kind of hard to do though after having them for over 5 years. I've gotten kind of attached to them, but I think you are right and it is time to lose them. If you did have me as your nurse though you probably wouldn't even know I had them unless you looked really close at my ears. I had coworkers that didn't even know I had gauged ears that I worked around for a year. Thanks for your opinions.

I have a friend that is a minister, and he has a number of piercings (not gauged like yours, but his ears are gauged.) He always tells people that he's marrying "do you have a problem with any of this? It can all go, or it can all stay... it's your call". BUT, he's in a position to give that option.

I have nothing pierced or tattooed myself, but about 80% of my friends have body alterations of some sort. My ex-wife had about 6 holes in each ear, and 7 tattoos. So to me, that stuff isn't strange. I might see a professional with gauges and think it's a bit odd for someone in their position to have them... but I don't think I would have any issues with them being able to perform their job correctly.

HOWEVER, in the medical field especially... you are likely to be dealing with older people. Doctors, hospital directors, patients... People from a time where such modifications were uncommon, or even unheard of. There are also the super-conservative people that view such deviant body modifications as totally unacceptable. THOSE people are likely to have a problem with you, which could be detrimental to you finding a job (which is hard enough these days, though I don't know any out of work nurses... especially male nurses, that are in demand.) It could also generate complaints from patients.

The thing is, 00 is pretty damn huge. If you decide to remove them, will you have surgery to repair the holes, or just leave them dangle? I'm sure a hole that big won't close up to be unnoticeable. Did you manage to stretch without cutting? (most of my friends with large gauges had to cut part of their lobe out... my idiot friend Larry ate what they cut... kinda gross!)

I did it the slow way of stretching them slowly and not cutting them so I have a greater chance of them looking halfway normal. When I had 0g I could take them out over night and they would pretty much close up to where they just looked like regular piercings, but since they are 00g they are kind of a slit after a night of being out. We'll see I think I will take them out while I am between quarters and hopefully they will close up in that month and a half to a somewhat normal look. If not I guess I will have to keep wearing the skin colored ones to cover up the wholes until I can afford to have them fixed.

Could you let them close as much as possible and wear smaller skin-colored plugs?

Ya I think that's probably what I'll end up doing if they don't close up to a normal look. Keeping my fingers crossed though. My brother was trying to stretch to 00g when he went too fast and tore his ear so he took them out. This has been at least 5 years ago and they went back to normal looking after about a month if I remember right, and his ears just look like he has normal piercings now. Not really noticeable. He's now a financial manager for a nonprofit.

Somebody asked this on Reddit. I took out my eyebrow piercing and unless I do my ears(tastefully, but i probably wont), i dont think Ill get any more piercings.

I like them, but beyond a certain point, they're TOO big. What happens in 50 years when your ears are all droopy? They'll have huge holes in them, lol.

Ya I've thought about that, but by that time there will be a lot of droopy eared people around lol, it probably won't be that abnormal. Being in the medical field if mine start looking too odd I will probably just have them fixed. Some people think my ears are too big, but I've liked how they look.

edit: I should look that up it would be interesting to see.

I would take them out. I've seen many ears with 00g holes in them grow to look completely normal. Depending on where you're at when you get comfortable with your new job, you can feel it out.

That's good to hear. I suppose I will take them out in the next couple of weeks. My brother's also told me it's probably time to take them out. Do you know how long it took them to start looking somewhat normal? I know everybody's ears are different but I just want a general idea of what to expect.

I can't remember for sure, but it was anywhere between 1-6 months for 80-90% reduction. From what I hear it takes a while for it to close up completely, but it should look just like any other piercing scar within 6 months to a year.

Ok ya that's a while. Thanks. I'll see what they look like after a month. Hopefully not too odd looking.
