people who flip cars on craigslist

serious have either no brains or no conscience.

ok this morning a white integra sedan was posted in my local CL http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/2380569078.html
i called the owner of the car in went to check it out since it was like a 10 miles from my place.

The owner stressed i should hurry since some kid is on his way from milwaukee. anyways i got there before anyone else checked the car out and it was a $500 car at most. rust and dents everywhere, so i offered the owner 800 and he said 900. we didnt reach an agreement on the price and i left before anyone else got there. went back home played some GT5 for about an hr or 2 only to check CL to see the same car posted by the guy who came to buy it after i left except this time the car was posted for 1500.http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/2381337269.html so im like wtf?? and call the dudes number whos now trying to flip the car even before the original ad is deleted

    HIM: hello
ME: hey im interested in buying your acura integra how many miles on it?
    HIM: 190 180 200 sumthin
ME: so you dont know the miles? how long have you owned it?
    HIM: 11 years
ME: did you fix the dent on the front fender yet?
    phone hangs up........

it is illegal to transfer ownership of a vehicle without youur name on the title. AKA "title jumping" here in WI

im not a hipocrite ill admit ive bought and sold cars on CL but thats AFTER ive put in weeks of work and hundreds of dollars into them to make them value the price i place on em. oh and getting the title transfered in my name and paying the State its revenue

    /rant

when i bought my prelude, i found out the owner didn't even transfer the title to his own name before selling it to me. he bought the car, used it for a little bit then sold it. the title was still under the first owner of the car. I'm technically the 3rd owner.

I would never pay that much for one of those old piece of shit integras. They are always haggered to shit.

PS: i called the number in the ad and said the exact same stuff you did. They hung up after " how long have you owned it " lmao

I really don't see a problem with " title jumping " as you say because it saves you money for transfering the title ( in maryland its $80 ). But at least clean the car up and post pictures

whoever it was said " oh its an acura you know it'll run forever " yeah great logic there.

i agree with you PR, it is business after all. but you have to pay to play. pay the state that is. and if you want to play big get a dealer license and hit up the local insurance auctions and make legit money.

              I'm one of those jerks.

I sold cars while I was unemployed to make money. Bought cheap, fixed and cleaned up a little and sold them all for profit.

However, I never claimed I owned the cars for any period of time, I did disclose that I was flipping them to the buyer.

You admitted you do the same thing but you put more money/time into it...

                Illegal is illegal...

                People need to make money

                Leave the guy alone.

Yeah, but what I was doing isn't illegal. In Alberta you cannot register a car in your name until it is insured first.

So, I would buy the car, have the seller write me a bill of sale, and I would drive the car home, because you have 14 days to insure/register a car after the date of purchase.

Once I got the car home, it would be posted for sale and when I sell it, I write a new bill of sale. It's all legal and no loop holes.

I wasn't talking about you.... The OP.. But what you said is illegal in most of the US ... For tax purposes... But generally not enforced.

oh I know. I think here you're allowed to sell about 6 or 7 cars as a private party per year before you need to register as a dealer and pay tax on them.

When I went to buy my Toyota Pickup, I ran into a ring of people doing that.

There were 2-3 guys in Providence, RI doing it. I could find the old ads and the new ads. They would outright lie on the condition too. The original ad would state the truck had rust in a few places, maybe needed a radiator or some other mechanical part.

The new ad would say that it was in good shape and ran perfectly.

The thing is, if you only give the person the bill of sale and don't sign the title, if there's some sort of problem with the car, they can't come after you, right? If I was the original owner and sold it to one of those shady resellers and they didn't sign the title and then another person bought it and was having some sort of title issue, the middleman has managed to sidestep the whole situation, right?

This is why when I sold my Mom's car, I made sure the person that bought it (obviously a reseller) sign the title and bill of sale, so that it would be on him.

I don't necessarily see a problem with flipping vehicles if you plan on buying something silly cheap, fixing it up and then reselling it, but when you buy it and post an ad lying about it, that's when I'm not the fan.

I wouldn't go near the resellers of the trucks because of this. Granted, the average consumer who doesn't search Craigslist 8-10 times a day when they're searching for a vehicle wouldn't notice that.

Well, it's people like us who are aware of these flippers that make us educated and weary.

It's so easy to find a sucker out there, or just someone who needs a cheap car they can jump in and drive right away.

When you sell cars in the $800-1500 price range, they go fast.
