Chances are the really cheap Kias are dealer overstock that they need to get rid of.

Kias are Hyundais... cheap, generally reliable, not top quality... but they'll last if you don't treat them like trash. Hyundai/Kia's mechanical reliability is pretty good, since they use that warranty to sell their cars. If they cut corners, it's most likely in all the areas that are not covered under that warranty... such as cosmetic parts, interior materials, etc...

The Forte has gotten a ton of praise, and all the car magazines seem to be more than happy to consider it a worthy competitor to the Civic and Corolla.

One of the Elantras I rode in my friend paid 12k for, and he knew the general manager of the dealership so you know he pretty much STOLE that car. I remember when the Dodge dealership here was selling Rams for 12k with the V6 and a 6 speed manual. I was considering buying one and when I went to inquire about it, all these bullshit charges popped up and the price of the truck was right around 15-16 I can't remember. If they sell you a Kia for 7k plus the tax, tag, and title being the ONLY charges, then I would say go for it. But just remember what I said. I saw a few 2005 and newer Kia Rios at the scrapper yesterday. Thats SAD for a 6 year old car.

The Kia Rio is basically the Hyundai Accent.

Don't forget, people buy these cars for dirt cheap, and they abuse them as throwaway cars. You can kill a perfectly good car quite easily with abuse, especially a cheap one. There are still Hyundai Excels rolling around... old as dirt, super cheap, not very well made in terms of quality parts... but made solidly enough to be on the road for 20 years when maintained.

There was a period when I was pretty sure I was going to have a ridiculously long commute to work and I was planning on buying a Nissan Versa base model (MSRP 9,999) to put a bunch of miles on to commute. I figured it'd be great to have a brand new car just to put tons of miles on.
            That's a good point.

How about the Nissan Versa or Toyota Yaris?

Not because I own a Versa but I've seen good reviews about them. I've also heard you can get a 1.6 sedan(base model) for $10K. Im sure that happens very seldom but with $5K downpayment your payments shouldn't be bad. I put $3K on mine and pay $150. Mine was $11,400 OTD(before downpayment).

I've heard bad news about engine sludge in the Versa, not sure which engine (since there are a few different ones.) My friend's neighbor had one, and my friend was interested in buying one... so she asked a few questions. The neighbor was actually just about to trade the car in for that sludge problem. Apparently the neighbor's brother is a Nissan tech, and said it's very common.
My friend bought a used Civic instead, and couldn't be happier.

I've heard that the Yaris is TERRIBLE in crash tests. I haven't seen any hard evidence of this, though.

I'd take the Fit over either of them... and I did. 185k miles on my Fit, and my ONLY complaint is that I can't reach the damn spark plugs.

Local junkyard charges triple price for modern Nissan four cylinder engines... I know someone in charge of selling them and they say they cant keep them in stock..... Only Nissan ......... Id would rather take a base Kia/ Hyundai then a base Nissan..... But a base Maxima to a top of the line Sonata Id take the Nissan..

Hyundai/ KIA do not hold value.... I am waiting to see how the current gen does with resale value 5 years out.... They are a completely different vechical across the line compared to a couple years ago quailty wise.

Hyundai should start holding their value in this generation or the next. Their marketing strategy is fantastic, so if their products are good enough not to completely turn people off, they'll do very well.

Nissan has a longer history building larger, more powerful engines, as well as the larger, more luxurious cars. The Maxima grew slowly into what it was... whereas the Sonata went from "budget Accord/Camry alternative" to "really nice car" in a fairly sharp spike over the last 2 generations (that's essentially going by Hyundai's marketing strategy, not my own opinion.)

id get a kia and not change the oil and coolant because when the motor blows up, it'll be worth the same as a used kia which is nothing.

hyundai, i have a little bit more respect but their 4 cylinders are crap.
                    I <3 G60.

Hyundai and Kia are the same now, though. Mechanically, I don't think there's a single Kia that isn't build nearly identical to an Hyundai. Agreed though, Kias are seen as budget cars... nothing worth keeping. They're working hard to change that image, though. Many of the new Kia models are very sharp looking. They almost seem to be aiming at the Scion crowd with Kia.

Hyundai's newer 4 cylinder has promise... but we shall see where it is in 5 years.

Hyundai seems to be saying "Look at us! We can make a Corolla, an Accord, a 370Z, and an LS460!"

Have people been doing anything worthwhile with the base Genesis coupe? The one with the turbo 4 that's supposedly begging for modification? Hyundai pretty much said flat out "this car is for the tuners."

ahem ahem,,i think i will b of some help to u guys regarding KIA MOTORS,,,all plz listen carefully , KIA Rio is 1400cc,,,just to live ur life,,no driving pleasure and nothing at all,,,just a piece of tin on 4 wheels,,the parts are really cheap, oil and oil filter will be changed in every 5000 km,,,20000km the brake pads and routine checkups, 60,000 timings belts and brake pads change,,, thats for all KIAs if u want ur car to be claimed under warranty,,,, Now the Cerato or a Koup,,,, Forte(Cerato) has two versions, 1600 and 2000cc,,,1600 hasnt got any problem, but 2000cc transmissions are not good at all,,,and they do have alot of problems, relating synchronizers,,,,Forte Koup is a bit expensive, Touch Ignition,Triptronic tranmission auto, the interior is too hot and the looks of the car is stylish but its 2.4 L engine, no problems that we have seen so far in warranty, but why not to get an optima if u would go for a Forte? Optima has two versions,,2.0L in Petrol and 2.4 L GDI,,,, diesel Injection, new technology, Optima is more stylish than any other car, Hyundai cars are not stylish at all,,, Optima is alot more stylish than Toyota Camry, and if u guy will go with Full Option Optima,Panorama with Glass Roof, Touch keyless ignition, with Navigation Control along with the Steering Gear Shifters with cruise control,,,the interior is awesome and the exterior is quite impressive,,,Dont know about nissan, but i know that Toyota Yaris has got alot of problems with there transmissions,,,KIA doesnt have any resale value, but toyota will be sold in very good price if u will compare it to KIA,,,As KIA is like SONY ERICSSON and Toyota is like Nokia,,,but Koreans have improved there technologies alot, KIA is following Mitsubushi's technology........ buy any Kia and i will provide u with the service manuals and spare parts catalogue, let me know if u will have any other problems,,,and yeah i work in spare parts,,,but too bad that i am in Saudi Arabia,if i would b in USA i could have allowed 40% discount to you for the rest of your life,,,

That's probably why the old Rio is really cheap... getting rid of the old, boring model, and bringing in the nice new one!

My aunt has a 2001 Rio. She once went 9,500k on a single oil change. not that i recommend that obviously. I must say, because in the recent years I've been doing most of her maintenance work that it does run decently for what it is.

they're decent cars, but there are probably equal quality or better condition used cars out there for the same price. i understand wanting to have a new rig though, payments vs. repair costs but most pre-owned cars in that pricerange include a decent warranty. there's potential either way. Her Rio gets about 36mpg she said she normally clocks in at. Granted that's highway mileage but damn good considering it's an 01 model and therefor a super-econobox tin can.

                              life is good.

I go 10,000 miles between oil changes on the Fit. Have been for the past 150,000 miles.
