So I graduated University last April in Criminology and now Im in a totally different field working as a new sales associate at a great Hyundai dealership! 60 days of training and I start on the floor this Monday, but wont be collecting commission until April. So this is really out of the blue and besides being a waiter I haven't really ever sold anything, but I'm learning a lot and it could potentially be a good or even great job.

I'm not working in my field of study either (yet, anyway... eventually, once I go back to grad school! )
Selling cars can be very profitable, if you're good at it. Hyundai is a good company to be with, because they have cheapie affordable cars like the Accent and Elantra, and now they have the luxo-beasts in the Genesis and Equus. I only see things improving for them in all directions! They also advertise HEAVILY, which takes care of much of your job for you! Their advertising has pretty much sold me on the brand, so if I were to walk into your dealership, it wouldn't take much to get me to drive away in one!

Good for you man. I wish you the best. Be proactive, but not pushy. Be approachable, helpful, well mannered and most of all, well spoken and informative.
One thing that really, really drives me nuts is young guys (under 30) who are car salesmen and think they're slick as grease and know everything about everything. As soon as I see a suited up greasy haired acne faced salesman greet me at the door, I'm out that front door as fast as I walked in. So beware, you might be the best salesman out there, but your age can really be a deterrent to more mature people looking to buy a car. That is actually one of the big things many dealers told me when I was applying for sales after taking a sales training course. One dealer even said to me in an interview, "put yourself in the customer's shoes. You, as a 30 or 40something year old couple looking to buy a new car, would you want to buy a $30-40k vehicle off some young kid?"
Needless to say, 7 years later, I've still never worked a day at a dealership selling cars. Places won't even hire me as a lot jockey or detailer. My good friend that I worked with at my last job just got hired on at a local GM/Caddy/Buick dealer in town as their lot attendant, and every day he sends me pic messages of sweet cars he's driving around in.
Anyways, I think you should be successful at Hyundai. They've got a great product line now. Remember; Greet the customer politely, inform them, answer their questions and don't push. Find some common ground with them as well, make the whole experience feel more personal than strictly business. It'll make them more comfortable and open up around you, rather than hesitant and unsure if they're going to get talked into buying something they won't be happy with. Everyone says there's no such thing as an honest car salesman. You have to remember that every car you sell, that person is now a client you have to follow up on and have an ongoing relationship with, so it's best to be on their good side.
Get out there and sell some Hyundais!

Thanks for the positive feedback guys. Deev you're absolutely right about the advertising, we dont even bother advertising on the radio because all the other dealers do it for us. And Crazymikey, you're are correct in the politeness and finding common ground. And you're also right about age. Fortunate for me I am over 30 so I guess that's a good thing.
