PS3 GT5 - No sound with optical cable???

Alright, I'm no whiz when it comes to home theater . I know the basics, but am using an optical cable for the first time ever. Here's my setup:

    42" Vizio LCD HDTV 120hz
Vizio 2.1 HD Sound Bar w/ wireless subwoofer
Playstation 3 (about 2 yrs old)

I'm running the HDMI cable from the PS3 to the No. 1 HDMI input on the TV. From the TV, I'm running a digital optical cable into the sound bar input. This setup works fine for my Direct TV and Wii. When I turn on my PS3 I get audio in the opening menu, but as soon as I select the game I hear a soft crackle and then no more sound. If I select Input 1 (RCA) I get audio just fine.

Does GT5 not support optical audio? Or am I missing something in the setup?

    Thanks

Not sure...I'm about to go through all the menu's.

Google search basicaly came up with several people complaining that after their most recent update they lost optical audio. Every time someone suggests going the the settings, the OP comes back saying they've already done that and it's all set right. I'm thinking it's the update that's causing it, but I'm gonna check my menu's anyway and see what happens.

Ok, so like I said I'm not the greatest with home theater. I pulled out my PS3 and saw that there is an optical out on the back . I'll have to try running the audio directly from the ps3 to the soundbar and see what happens. I did have to change some things in the menu also. Let you know what I find out.

Ran the optical cable from the ps3 directly to the sound bar. Changed the audio output to Optical, 5.1 surround (no 2.1 option), and selected Bitstream, no dice. Had to switch back to hdmi and use the rca input on soundbar and now audio is back on.

So I'm going with the fact that it's an update issue, unless anyone else has more ideas I can try.

Under the audio option, have you enabled "multiple-audio" out? This allows for HDMI and an optical audio to be heard well at least that is the way I have it set up for my tv and surround sound system.

It's not an update issue, I've only ever used optical output on the PS3 since I've owned it, and never had an issue.

Is the optical plug on the sound bar an input or output?
When you select Optical output on the PS3 which options are you selecting, and what options does your sound bar accept?

It is an input, works fine with all other components. I'll have to re-check the options again tonight. I can get the optical audio to work fine in the PS3 menu screen, but as soon as I select the game, it crackles and I loose audio.

There should be setting in the cross media bar to set it up.
Here is the Online user guide for the PS3 on how to set up audio outs, hope this helps. (screen shots can be viewed in the link.)
                    http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...diooutput.html

                    Audio Output Settings
Adjust the system's audio output settings. These settings are mainly used when the system is connected to audio devices that support digital audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment systems.
                    1.
Confirm the formats supported by your audio device.
Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
                    2.
                    Select (Settings) > (Sound Settings).
                    3.
                    Select [Audio Output Settings].
                    4.
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

                    5.
                    Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in use. If [Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed. If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically set the audio output format. (In this case, the HDMI device must be turned on.)

                    6.
                    Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the button.

                    7.
                    Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.

                    Hints
[Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output connectors by default. If you change the audio output settings, audio will be output only from the connectors that were set.
If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI], or select (Settings) > (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].
If you select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] in step 5, sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted from some audio devices.
When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.
If Dolby TrueHD is selected as the audio output format, audio will be output in Dolby Digital while Blu-ray 3D™ content is being played.
If DTS-HD is selected as the audio output format, audio will be output in DTS while Blu-ray 3D™ content is being played.
                    Notices
Some PlayStation®2 or PlayStation® format software titles may perform differently on the PS3™ system than they do on PlayStation®2 or PlayStation® systems, or may not perform properly on the PS3™ system.
Also, PlayStation®2 format software cannot be played on some PS3™ systems. For details, refer to [Types of Playable Discs], visit the SCE Web site for your region or review the documentation that was included with your PS3™ system.
