Gabrielle Giffords.

Not sure if you guys and girls have been watching the news but the representive for my District. District 8, was shot in the head this morning here in Tucson Arizona.

Heres what we know.

Jared Laughner is the shooter. Afghan war Veteran, 22 years old, and graduated from Mountain View High School.

Shooting occurred at 10:11am this morning at a Safeway on Ina and Oracle.

6 people have been killed, 12 have been injuried critically.

Pima County Sheriffs are executing several search warrants. they recovered the weapon and they are focusing on how the shooter got to the scene. there was no car associated with the shooter at the scene.

I have met Congresswoman Giffords on several Occasions and I did vote for her in this past November's election, because she is a strong, sturdy representative, who can get stuff done. my most recent memory is at the Cop and Rodders Car Show here at the end of November. Shes pretty knowledgable about the cars that were there. didnt know everything but she kept up with us. a very warm and considerate person who I respect.

I just hope that Congresswoman Giffords pulls through this and that the coward in this case is punished to the fullest extent of the law.

My friend told me about the incident. I read a few articles, and I've actually been keeping up on what's going on based on your Facebook posts, Ray.

I hope she pulls through. Shame the others died.

I know Mike, I am in shock that it happened. because out of all of the politicans we have, she is the most socialble out of all of them and for someone to do this, is unthinkable.

Is there even any suspected motive? It doesn't seem to me that she was a key player in any noteworthy happenings. I mean, she beat out a Tea Party backed candidate in the recent election, she's aggressive from what I've read, and she's the youngest congresswoman to date... but none of that seems worthy of being a target for assassination. Perhaps the shooter was just deranged (some people don't always come back right in the head from war, sadly) or he was just looking to take out someone with a high profile. You know, make a name for himself, like the guy that shot John Lennon.

Youre asking the same question everyone is asking. Giffords has had some very big words for some very big subjects, but nothing like our lovely Governor Brewer who has basically wanted to get rid of all of the illegals.

Cops and everyone are being very quiet, and the suspect has been takened to an undisclosed location because now there is threats from people who want to kill him.

The Doctor who did the brain surgery said that Giffords was responsive when she came into the hospital. but I am hoping that is a sign for things to come.

I can't imagine she'll be fully functional after a bullet through the brain, though. Hopefully she'll have some quality of life, but I doubt she'll be able to carry on as congresswoman.

Was she outspoken about any issues that might be of interest to a veteran? I know the hot topic in AZ is the illegal Mexican immigrants... but you'd think an American soldier would be more supportive of that than most.

No none of the issues she was outspoken about would warrant any kind of reaction from the Veteran portion. in fact when she was re elected she stunned the republicans because the veterans endorsed her over the republicans. she's married to a Navy Captain. so she is very compassionate about Veteran Affairs.

Now I am listening to one person who was there and it sounds random. I'll summarize what he said.

He said that Congresswoman Giffords and her Senior Advisor were talking to an elderly couple in front of the store. he said that the shooter, came up, running from northside of the parking lot. there was two groups of people in front of the store and he said that the gunman was looking and then pulled the gun and started shooting. he indicated that the bullets never stopped. which support the reports of an automatic weapon.

in the end, he ended up taking out both groups. which does indicate that it was random.

I've been looking into this and I'll throw up a few comments:

Raging Asian,
I highly doubt it was a random incident. It was more than likely planned to some extent.
Also, I can guarantee it was not an automatic weapon and I can almost guarantee it was a 9mm Full Metal Jacket because 9mm is known to over-penetrate especially with FMJ's. I wouldn't be surprised if he used a Beretta 92fs (M9) pistol if, in fact, he was ex-military.

The fortunate thing is that he used full metal jacketed ammo. Had he used Jacketed Hollow Points, Gabrielle Giffords would have been killed instantly.

People have been shot in the head before with no perminent damage. While I wouldn't put money on it, I wouldn't be surprised if she was 95% or more of what she was. Hopefully anyway.

What a terrible loss of life.

Interesting FYI, I also went to Mountain View High School... just on the other side of the country.

Not necessarily true. In Arizona a few years ago there was a guy who legally openly carried an AR15 on his back near a rally. He wasn't arrested and there were no problems.

I was doing a bit more research and Loughner tried to join the Army but was denied. He's not a veteran.
