    Lost my job

Great way to ring in the new year. Go into work this morning. Work for about an hour and the boss comes out and asks to speak to my partner and I.

So they drag us into the office with one of the company owners sitting there waiting for us and they say "sort of a crappy way to bring in the new year, but with the lack of work coming up for the next few months, we have to restructure." I've worked for this company for about a year and a half as their whipping boy/delivery driver. I deliver entire kitchen/bathroom/entertainment/storage etc cabinetry. Pretty decent job. Drive around all day, go to cool houses, meet all sorts of people and made $15/hr for doing so.

About 4 other people got layed off as well. It's somewhat of a blessing in disguise. I've been trying to find something else for the past few months because I've been fed up with the bullshit there and the way they're been shitting on us, when both of us come in every day, bust our asses and don't ask for anything in return.

Boss made us clean out our truck and take all our stuff, let us make our rounds saying farewell to our coworkers and then escorted us out the building with our paychecks.

Got home about 830 this morning, and immediately applied for Unemployment and got that out of the way, and I've already applied to 3 jobs and it's only 2pm as I write this.

So here's to the new year and a fresh start.

    "You're fired." Pretty much. :/

Gotta love Canada. Unemployment is such a long, drawn out deal here.

Well, good luck in your future endeavors. Hopefully it works out for you.

Sorry about the job man. Look at it like a blessing. Now you get to concentrate and find something better. Have their new whipping boy/delivery guy bring a kitchen to you!

Thanks guys. I applied to a bottled water company in town here that is looking for a delivery driver. I dropped off my resume and told the guy I got layed off today as a delivery driver and he was like "ah, well they will most definetly call you in for an interview."

Also put my resume in at an autobody supply store, which is where I buy most of my paint and prep materials. They're looking for customer service reps (ie: desk job, answering phones, helping customers, inventory and stock stuff).

And finally, a couple weeks ago I applied to CP Rail for a train conductor position, and they reviewed my resume and invited me to an info seminar and assessment on January 11.

I moved to Alberta in May 2009, from Ontario. I had been unemployed in Ontario for about 7 months and couldn't find a job to save my life. I packed up and moved here and was working within my first week of getting here. I had about 4 jobs in 2 months which got me started, and then I got hired on in July 2009 at my job I got layed off from today.

We've got some big companies here in town such as Maple Leaf Meats, Frito Lay, Pepsi bottling and Lantic Sugar. Apparently Frito Lay is always looking for staff and pay pretty decent as well, so I may look into that, as much as I don't want to get back into the factory work regime again, but you gotta do what you gotta do to make a living.

I got laid off back in October after working there for almost 7 years. Unemployment is only like 195 bucks a week but it pays all the bills except for food and gas.

It's kind of cool sitting at home BUT i gets boring really fast.

                    I hear ya on that...

I got a promotion and a bump in salary today only to be told that work was slowing down again and there was a chance I could be shipped to the Houston or Toronto office as a temporary assignment. I've been on a roller coaster there since July of 09 when I was given two weeks notice, only to be brought back the day I was supposed to leave. Been hanging on ever since. It's a tough, tough market out there.

                    Gotta love it.

That sucks man... but it sounds like it wasn't a great job anyway. Now at least you'll have unemployment coming in while you find something you really like! And like sparkle said, find something under the table and pad your unemployment income a bit (pizza delivery drivers often do well, and the local shops rarely put you on the books!)

King James is (or was, I think he's not doing it anymore) a train conductor in Canada. I forget where, or who for, but he might be able to give you some advice.

AW, you could get shipped to Houston or Toronto? Wtf?

Sorry to hear about your job loss.Dont get discouraged, keep your head up. I read how you did some driving.I work at Fed Ex Ground as a driver. All thats required is a regular class c license and a clean record with at least 6 months experience driving some type of truck (not a passenger) within the last year, to qualify as a potential driver.Im not sure how it works where you live but, its worth a shot.Usually the starting pay is $650 weekly (salary). Since Fed Ex Ground is contracted the contractors usually top off drivers pay at $750 per week. Theres also Fed Ex Express which is paid hourly plus ware house positions.Good luck with everything, be patient and give thanks for everything you still have and for the better things that are coming!
