    Searching...

Ok, as you all know, we've used about 50% of the recent downtime to optimize the search tables, and process all the posts on the site. It is not yet 100% complete, but much more so than it ever has been. Searches should be more accurate.

HOWEVER, I've noticed some people bitching about the search function still not working.

I figured I'd take the opportunity to clarify a few things.

    1) You cannot search for less than 3 characters. There aren't all that many things that are 1 or two characters worth searching for anyway... and if you can't express your query using more characters, then you probably shouldn't be on the internet in the first place.

    2) Keep your search brief, yet focused. Focus on things that may be limited ONLY to the post or posts that you're trying to find. The "advanced search" feature is great for this. If you know who posted something, using that feature to narrow the results down to their posts only will help considerably.

    and, the big one...
#3) DON'T SEARCH FOR AN ENTIRE SENTENCE!!!
Seriously. The error that was shown to me by at least one other member (not very politely, I'll add...) is seen when you search for something like "I want a big muffler to put on my 1993 Honda Accord sedan".
You're not asking Jeeves here. The search feature is going to attempt to find threads using every single word in that search query... and trust me, there are a LOT of threads that use words like "I", "a", and "to"! Like... ALL OF THEM!

If you want to search for a specific string, such as a sentence, go to Google. Type the sentence you want in quotes, followed by site:www.cb7tuner.com. Google has the technology to search this site for an entire sentence. Our little forum does not. We're only OBD1 here, guys.

You should end it with "Mmmkay kids ? ......Drugs are bad"

Are you kidding me? People search with a sentence? OMG. Thought was common sense to search by a few words, at the most.

      Wow, just wow.

        Thanks Trev!

Yeah, I saw the posts whining about how the staff is doing a horrible job keeping the search function working properly, with a screen shot of the error that was given. I went to the search bar, typed in 3 characters. Got a result. Typed in 2, got nothing ("tb", which I KNEW would find throttle body threads if 2 characters worked, but I knew that they don't... because I set it to search for 3 or more!)
Then I typed in that sentence above... and boom. The same white-screen error.

So I'm sorry... if you're getting that error, it's not the site that's stupid, it's you. I can't fix you. If I could, I'd be charging a hell of a lot more than I currently do!

And honestly, anything technical with this site is my responsibility alone. Not the moderators, not the hosts, mine. mchaley was kind enough to tinker with the site when I was crazy busy with work, and had run out of ideas. It was not his responsibility. He did so because he loves this site, and he's just awesome like that. the only reason he has access to the admin functions is because it makes MY life easier. Various things that he does as the host are more easily accomplished if he has admin access, and I trust him enough with that to allow it.

you may be able to search for an entire sentence with google. I'm going to look into putting a google search up in the search drop menu.

This might be a stupid question but I need to ask...
Why when you open up a forum section such as ``Appearance``
does it tell you there are over 1000 threads in the body parts aero section but upon opening the link
to ``Appearance-Aerodynamics`` there is only 5 threads?

You have to go into your user settings and change the default thread age cutoff to show all threads.

down at the bottom, there is a drop down menu that allows you to choose from how long ago you want the threads to show up. i believe it will only show 30 or 60 days in the past as the default. you can choose "show all threads" in that menu.
