    Drum machine software?

    Ok, I'm looking to try writing my own songs. I want to see if I can get some basic stuff recorded, and the only thing I can't do myself are drums. I figure a good drum machine program would come in handy, rather than picking up a cheap drumset and trying to learn (while pissing off my neighbors, and being look down upon by the 16 year old across the street that's already a great drummer... no, he won't play with me.)

    Anyway, I'm getting lost in a sea of obnoxiously complicated programs. Most of which are geared towards electronic music... which makes sense. However, I want to write rock/punk songs.
    I don't need anything complicated... in fact, the simpler the better! As long as I can emulate a 6 piece drum kit, and write fairly simple beats and fills, I'll be satisfied. I just want it to sound at least somewhat like real drums... Punk rock and 808 or 909... they just don't go together!

    I'm looking to start a new band, but I want some completed material on hand before I go searching for members. I think this would be a great way to do it.

    So, does anyone know of any such program? Free or paid, doesn't matter. Free is preferable, but I can always pirate a paid program, try it, and if I like it, I'll pay for it (I don't condone stealing, but I don't want to pay big bucks for something I won't use!)
    If anyone has experience with writing beats, and would like to lend a hand in making music with me, I'm open to that as well!

    Pro tools is a good one or you can try a cheaper software called Acid. either way they get the job done.

      I actually have Acid on my computer already!
      I haven't messed with it in years... I'll give it a shot.

      I just foud PC Drummer, which seems pretty cool, but I don't know if I want to shell out the $50 for it just yet.

        Yeah, I have NO idea how the hell to use Acid... Figuring that out for my purposes would be like teaching myself quantum physics just to solve 2+2!

          What platform are you on Windows or MAC?

          I make mostly electronic music with some real drums in the mix depending on the style.

          I am using Ableton Live 8 which is the newer version out. It's an okay program. It has built in instruments and a lot of effects. The work flow is great but if like every other program the only way to record your instrument is to have an external sound card.

          Ableton is great for recording too because it uses clips and scenes. You have to use it to experience the greatness.

          As for drum machines I would use EZ drummer it has MIDI loops and amazing drums sounds.

            I'm on a PC, running XP.

            I've heard of Ableton before. I think my singer once tried it for recording purposes (I forget what he finally settled on...

            Most likely, I'll just write a beat on the computer, and then bounce it down via a line out to a cheap digital 4 track. With all the musician friends that I have, I'm sure one of them has one that I can buy cheap or borrow for free!


            I just want to be able to slap beats together quickly and easily. When I write, if I get bogged down too much on the details, I lose what I have in my head!

              It's fairly simple on Ableton or any other DAW just have EZ drummer in on a channel and you can draw your beat on to the beat grid and its velocity sensitive too, so you can catch the "realness" of the drums and add a groove to the notes.

              You can download the full Ableton suite via pirate bay and ez drummer too.

                Fruity loops is easy and they have a free verison and you can buy it,Thats what I used to make alot of beats and alot of people used um......Hit me up and I will see if I can send my stuff to ya.............Im telling ya Fruity loops is the way to go.........

                    If you're going for for easy to use, it doesn't get much more simple then EZ drummer, there are plenty of premade beats for each type of drum kit that you could use to make many different songs if you want to go that route. I personally use Ableton 8.0.1 to record instruments and I started with Toontracks EZ Drummer.

                      Deev, I just uploaded two different types of songs real quick that I threw together probably about 6 months ago to show you how the premade EZ Drummer grooves can sound. These are in no way the best songs ever written, more of me messing around lol


                      This first one is more chill and laid back music. It's more of a guitar and bass song then drums, but I figured it would show you basic stuff. I used just the basic kit on this one

                        http://www.xlnaudio.com/ addictive drums are awesome but honestly id go with reaper and addictive drums or superior drummer. EZ drummer sounds cheap to me. FL studio is good if you have never used a true DAW before but reaper is great and its only 60 bucks.

                          I agree with Superior Drummer. I started out using EZ Drummer but upgraded to Superior because you can get a lot better sound because there are so many more ways to eq and tune the drums. It's more difficult though and I still have a lot to learn lol

                            Yeah, I just need easy. If the learning curve is too steep, I won't put forth the effort. It's hard enough for me to write entire songs, something I've never done very well... so I don't want to make that any more difficult than it really is!
