    Honda automatics

This applys to my integra. And no one helps in " other automotive " so im putting this in off topic

Anyways. Why is it bad to manually down shift an automatic?

Today i was driving up a steep hill not trying to speed. The only true way to downshift it would be to floor it. But then i would down shift and be giving it alot of throttle. So instead i just shifted it into 2 ( i was only doing 35 ) and everything went smoothly

Also on the integra it has a " sports " mode too. Its actually effective on the integra though. Anyways the sports button shifts it from s3 to s4. So is it safe to downshift using this button?

Also i changed my ATF with genuine acura AFT ( yes yes its honda atf but they brand the bottle from acura ). My automatic transmission has 288k on it. The old fluid looked like melted choclate. it seems to shift smoother but was that a bad idea?

And i just have to post this up because its beast. A fucking electric generator in my car. I closed the hatch and was on my way home lol.

Who says it's bad to do that? It's fine to manually downshift it. I also gererally leave it in D3 and shift if into D4 when I get on the freeway. I seem to get a little better mileage when it isn't dropping in and out of overdrive.

The sport mode does this all well. It just keeps it from hitting overdrive.

It's bad, at least I've heard, to walk your automatic through 1st, 2nd, etc. as you are launching your car. But manually downshifting your car is usually fine as long as you aren't doing highway+ speeds. Even at those speeds though, going from D4 to D3 is fine so long as you watch your revs.

And as for the fluid, as long as you just removed the old fluid and put new stuff in you should be fine. I've heard several horror stories of people losing their trannies after doing a full transmission flush. If you saw no metal flakes you should be fine. And that consistency is on par with not changing your tranny fluid at regular intervals.

In the accord, i used to downshift to D3 sometimes to engine brake rather than foot brake. I was never going more than 50 and i didnt do it THAT often. I would sometimes cruise in 2nd but only under 20 or 25. Very rarely would i stay in D2 or D3. Only time i was in D1 was in a blizzard. I drove 10mph the whole time, lol.

Deeeefinitely change your ATF fluid every, what, 50k miles? I even have a cooler on mine. Heat kills trannies

I don't think it's 'bad' to do that but I think when kids think they have a manumatic and can go through 1-4 by manually shifting an auto... that's when it causes problems after a while.

yeah a lot of kids around here shift their auto's like they were standards. i just don't get why. idk, from down low downshifting i'd imagine it'd be fine...but auto's should be driven as auto's should, generally speaking. imo

              life is good.

When I started to part out my Accord and junk it , I manually shifted the auto tranny for a week. Abused the fugg out of it. Bulletproof trannies , but doesn't mean it's recommended.

Whole reason I got rid of my Accord cuz of that damn stupid slushbox.

i did that to my beretta auto trans. it ruined it. its bad because the car cant sense the speed and adapt to the rpm its gonna be at and theres nothing there to compensate for it. like on a manual the clutch is there to handle the downshifting. autos dont have that kind of "clutch"

Downshifting for hills is fine. That's one of the reasons why the transmission can be shifted like that. It's only bad (and not useful for performance) to shift like it's a manual when racing. Even thuogh it shouldn't shift until the TCU says it can, even with a manual shift. Nothing in the shifter is physically connected to the gear change mechanisms anyway.

As for a fluid change... it's ALWAYS good to change your fluid regularly (I'd say even sooner than every 50... every 30, or less if you drive in heat or drive hard). The only thing that is supposedly bad, especially with older, worn out transmissions, is to flush it.

Interesting. How many have you buried in your cellar?

                            Pre-op, post-op or both?
