My attempt at a cover.. lol

So I've played guitar off and on for a few years but I recently just started to try to learn how to record stuff.

It's not studio quality (especially since YouTube butchers quality) and I'm not professional by any means haha, but it's a start. I'm still learning how to put 4-6 guitars parts together, learning how to use drum programs, learning to pan, volume adjustments here and there, etc. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but let me know what you think.

Oh and the song is by In Flames

So is that you playing everything? If so, very good job! I wouldn't have the patience to piece everything together like that.

You're not bad with the drum programming, either. With all you've done there, you could easily make your own music along the lines of Passage/Exodus era Samael. If you're not familiar with them, check those two albums out.

      In Flames is awesome, btw.

Sounds pretty good. I'm no pro, to me that sounded like a seamless mix job

When I first started listening, I thought to myself "I can't hear him playing over the original"... then I heard no vocals, read further, and realized it was ALL you.

Great job man! I love that song. I didn't bother to see what song you were covering, but I recognized it immediately. Kick ass!

That's very impressive. I've not heard the original before so I don't know how it compares, but none the less it's very good.
Been a long time. Still alive...

That guitar looks like the Epi Prophecy GX. I checked one of those out, I was surprised how well it played. I love the looks of the LP body, but I can't deal with the weight AND the thick neck. My PRS is as thick-necked as I can handle.

You did a great job mixing, and the clarity is awesome. As Deev mentioned, getting that timing correct on the drum machine is commendable. I emailed my buddy out in TX your video. He's been recording acoustic covers of In Flames songs. We were in a band for a while, and that's pretty much what we covered.

I can't wait to hear more from you!

I checked out the original... it's a very good representation of it. (I have to say, I like older In Flames better, like the Jester Race... or even following Jurgen back to when he was in Dark Tranquility, on Skydancer...)

I need to get a nice guitar. I have 2 Squier Strats... one is beat, and a poorly made Mexican version. The other is in good shape, and a better made Japanese model. I just played a PRS for the first time this weekend (two of them, actually), and they were nice. Not my style, but one with ESP pickups and bat fret inlays was pretty damn sweet...

It took me a day or two to learn all the guitar/bass parts and I threw them all together the other night. You never realize how sloppy you play until you try to record Mixing is the biggest pain though!

I'm not a pro video maker either so it took me a few minutes to learn how to sync the video and music together lol

It is indeed a Prophecy GX. When I got it, I was deciding between a Gibson LP studio for $1200ish and this guitar for $800. I was really surprised how versatile the Dirty Finger pickups were, anything from blues to decent metal. I like the finish better then a regular studio, plus it has coil tap so I can switch the pickups to single for different tone. With the few hundred I saved I put it towards my interface and headphones lol

I still have a lot to learn, but thanks for the compliments!

Yeah, recording is tough. I'm used to playing in a band where we all read each other. If one of my bandmates changes something on the fly, I can pick up on it and adjust what I'm doing as well. When I'm playing to a recording, it's all locked in. I have to get it right, or it sounds like crap! I've never done anything like you did there, though... I'd love to learn.

Have you tried writing and recording anything yourself yet?
Throw some keyboards and vocals in there, and you could do something like this:

If I could do that, I totally would.

It's entertaining to do/learn when you have some free time, even though it can be frustrating sometimes haha.

It's funny because I love such a wide variety of music, I usually listen to heavier/progessive stuff though. Even though I love metal, I love playing acoustic guitar also, and I tend to write more mellow stuff, however when I pick up my electric, metal is what comes out!

I did start writing a metal song last week, but I kind of hit a wall and haven't revisited the song again yet. My interface has a 37 note midi keyboard and I have Reason, so I definitely want to learn to use some keys here and there. I need to download those Samael cds, sounds like good stuff!

They're really good. Their older stuff is more straightforward death metal, and their newer stuff is more electronic... but the ones I mentioned are amazing. One of the best live bands I ever saw as well.

I'm more a fan of older In Flames also, Clayman, Whoracle etc. New stuff is a little calmer, more electronic also. It's too bad Jesper left the band also!

My first electric was a crappy ebay guitar that was shaped like a LP but sounded horrible and couldn't stay in tune to save its life lol. If I could afford the $2000-$5000 PRS guitars, I'd love to have one also

Yeah, I was at Guitar Center with AccordWarrior on Sunday, and we were checking out the $5000 ones. Even the salesman said they were great, but the $600 ones do the job just fine.

I make it a point not to have equipment better than my abilities. Once I get too good for what I have, I'll upgrade... but there's no point in owning expensive stuff that you can't make sound any better than affordable stuff. Hell, my baby is a $200 (used price) Peavey Foundation fretless bass (Fender Jazz Bass style, basically). It's not a bad instrument, but it's also nothing amazing. It's beat to hell. It suits me perfectly
