It really depends on where the site is being hosted. A web hosting company such as 1&1 or Pandemic will have IDS, IPS and Firewalls to prevent any attacks.

If the site is being hosted off of someones home computer, It will be much easier to compensate the security.

firstly, what do you mean by "getting into"?

is it a website with a database (mysql or otherwise) that you want to gain access to/gather information from?

or do you simply want file structure access?

well, OK lets start with the basics. What is the url of the site? I can get the IP from DNS and try to trace where the site is hosted and located. Maybe see where I can get with FTP and telneting.

We're looking to gather information. Not change/alter anything in any way, just copy a few files from a neighbor. It's been an ongoing friendly rivalry that I've just been invited to join in on.
