Ah but it will go on forever because you can fit more 9mm into a pistol. 8 .45 in a 1911 whereas one pistol (forget if it's an XD or what) can fit 19 9mm.
My springfield holds 13+1 if I remember correctly... DAMN I need to go shooting, I've fogotten my own magazine capacity

And if it takes you more than 2 or 3 shots to stop an intruder, again, you have no business handling firearms haha. I mean, if you need 8 shots to do it with, where did those other 5 or 6 rounds go? Through the wall? Hit your daughter? Through a neighbors window?? Do it right the first time around.

You're probably right. My home is not very large though, so my mag light will illuminate enough to be able to find the intruder quickly. Not perfect, but I think it will do the trick. I wouldn't even consider it for anything outdoors, though. Now I'm going to have to go home and shine my light around at night and see what it looks like in the house.

The gun is heavy, but (in my head at least) most of the weight rests in the grip. When I put a light on it the weight moves dramatically down the barrel. Most likely I just need to put one on there for a few weeks and get used to the feel and it would be fine, but I haven't gotten around to it. Given how expensive a good light is, I've been opting to save my money for now in preference of a home defense shotgun (Remington 870 or a Mossberg 590 are my top choices at the moment) with a flashlight on that.

More importantly, I live in the middle of nowhere and nobody comes knocking, so while I do opt to be at least somewhat prepared, the odds are very low that I'll be messed with.

This thread reminds me that I need to get a shorter barrel for my Maverick 88. 28" barrel just doesn't cut it for home defense, especially with the tiny hallways in this place.

In Fl, to legally store your gun, it must be three nameable steps from firing. This CAN include safes, locks, ect. My steps are unwrap gun, load gun, cock gun.
The weapon cannot be stored loaded.
The ammo must be in a separate place from the gun. (in vicinity is fine, but not loose on the shelf)
This is so that if you HAVE to use your gun, you can prove that you are not a wack-job looking for an excuse to pop a cap.
You can carry your gun in your car as long as it is done in this manner-ammo separate from gun, gun 3 steps from firing. If you got pulled over you just tell the cop you carry a fire-arm in the vehicle. If you are legit, you have nothing to worry about.
As I said, these are Fl laws, and as a responsible gun owner, I know the law.
I'm sorry but I can not find the "three step" law you're talking about. I've looked in the Florida Statutes:
            http://www.flsenate.gov/statutes/ind...790/ch0790.htm

The "three step" law is, in fact, an urban legend. For the real laws, check here:
            http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/FLSL.pdf

I'd also encourage you to get your concealed permit (CCW).

Cable locks are probably better than trigger locks. Good call!

I've never been in a gun fight but, due to high stress, you aren't going to be accurate. You really need to know where everyone is so that you don't shoot a family member.

Your light will illuminate enough to find someone or something in your house. BUT having a really bright flashlight will help aid in a weapon. Shining a very bright light in someone's face will cause temporary blindness which will give you a much bigger advantage. I plan on buying one and carrying it along with my knife 24/7.

I LOVE flashlights for self defense. They're one of the ONLY forms of self defense that is allowed on commercial international flights!

In a home invasion it's always best to call 911, gather your family, and hunker down until police arrive to clear your house. Most people (me included) lack the knowledge to clear a house and will put themselves in great danger. A 28" barrel is fine if you're aiming down a hallway or at a door.

Having had the required training to have HAD a permit, since before I was old enough to actually get one; the 3 step process is a personal/procedural safety measure.
If you always keep your gun 3 nameable steps from firing, within your own car (but it matters WHERE you park it), or home, you will know that you have been within the bounds of the law.
Here is the Florida statues about LAWFUL gun ownership in my state.

              http://www.flsenate.gov/Statutes/ind...n%2025#0790.25

While the steps are not there, they are taught to us as a simple way to know we are legal.

I guess the law is different where you live!

I see. So everyone who has a concealed permit is breaking the law? You know they carry their weapons loaded, right? Florida is one of the best states for gun owners to live in because there are so few laws. The 3 step "law" is nothing more than rumor. You can have that gun loaded and sitting under your pillow for all the law cares.

Did you check your laws about having a pistol grip? Barrel length? Are you in spec? The law will care if you have a 10" barrel (you don't) more than if you keep that gun three steps from being loaded.

I'm sorry, are you saying that the links I provided were for UNLAWFUL gun owners?

While the steps are not there, they are taught to us as a simple way to know we are legal.
                So it's not a law?

I guess the law is different where you live!
                So it IS a law?
The three step process is not a law. People HAVE been arrested for violating it. Those people are now millionaires because they sued and won for civil rights violations. Keeping the gun three steps from being loaded will NOT protect your kids if they find it. IF you want to protect your kids, buy a locking device. Don't fool yourself with a false sense of security by keeping your gun "three steps from being loaded".

When I carry a pistol concealed on my person, locked and loaded, am I violating your law?

While the steps are not there, they are taught to us as a simple way to know we are legal.
If it's not written, it's not a law. If it's not a law, you can't be arrested for it. Plain and simple. Someone could say "all guns are banned. It's not written but it's a law."

I'm not criticizing you. Just trying to correct your misconceptions of what your laws are. They do vary from state to state but Florida does not have a three step program

I was thinking from more of a mobility standpoint. I want to be able to aim quickly without having to run into anything or having it be unwieldy.

for what it's worth I'm researching this rule. Apparently it's taught in the Florida CCW classes. Stay tuned.
