    Any grunge fans here?

I know it's oldschool... and I'm, well... old.

My friend's band finally got a website up, and they're all about the oldschool grunge sound (though a bit updated... I don't feel like I'm listening to something the Melvins would've released 20 years ago...)

Their whole album is up for streaming. I've been listening to it all day. They're trying to actually do something with their music, but it's not really a style that's popular right now, unfortunately. They'd have been rock stars in 1993!

Give it a listen if you're interested in that sort of thing. They don't sound like some small-time bar band. They're professional level (my friend Eric, the guitarist and singer, is a freaking genius).

Probably their biggest influence. (personally, I'm not a fan of Nirvana... I'd take GantoBarn over Nirvana, and not just because they're my friends... )

I liked their early stuff, when they were darker (though most of their songs were about drugs... but I guess so were Nirvana's) Their later stuff got a little folky... Alice in Chains definitely had the best look, though! When I think grunge, that's the look I think of!

No fair... you remember pooping? Lucky!

I wasn't really into music all that much then... I was just discovering what I liked (I got into Metallica by 13... and I credit them as being the first band I REALLY liked.) I never owned a Nirvana album. I own Alice in Chains "Dirt", and Pearl Jam's "Ten" (the first half is amazing, the second half, I feel is forgettable... not a huge fan of the band that named themselves after ejaculatory fluid...) Got to see the Melvins and L7 live when I was 14, but I didn't really care for either.

Yeah, I heard a few songs on the radio. Definitely picked up where Layne left off. I was actually expecting Jerry to take over singing duties, as his voice was somewhat similar, and he always sang backup.

Yep Im one of the lucky few who can remember the days of the wee poop....oddly enough I cant remember when my last bowel movement was tho

Im sure you have reasons why you dont like Nirvana....but how could you not? haha....they are the band I credit with me really getting into music....when all my friends in high school were listening to whatever was cool at the time I was rocking to Nirvana MTV unplugged in new york (my fav album ever btw)....it pretty much made me start to play guitar.....The song "the man who sold the world" (i know its not a nirvana original) is the first one that I forced myself to learn legitimately

The unplugged stuff is probably the only things they did that I'm not totally sick of right now. Their Bowie cover was absolutely amazing.

I dunno... aside from their hits being WAY overplayed...
My best friend was into them before I was. I liked them, but I was into the heavier stuff. The day Cobain had a shotgun sandwich for lunch, my friend went nuts. He started making "RIP Cobain" posters to hang in his windows. He started dressing like him. He would listen to Nirvana nonstop... It irritated the hell out of me that this band that was pretty good suddenly because the greatest thing ever because their frontman was dead. I started high school in 1994, so I got to see the change among the impressionable youth in full swing (since Cobain died right around this time in 1994)

I just think that Cobain's death pushed the band into the realm of being overrated. He died, and became a legend... the music was only a part of it.

Now that you said it I completely agree....first time Im sure youve seen that eh deev ahha

Seriously tho I do now see your point.....I love them simply because I love their music and it speaks to me (girliest thing Ive said here in awhile)....It would annoy me to all hell to see people just jumping on the band wagon because they suddenly are the it thing cuz cobain offed himself....I can only imagine how overplayed their songs were back in the day after that.

Also cuz I havnet mentioned it

to your friends band....they are good

                            Werd.

Yeah, it's moreso the fans that turned me off of the band... and the overexposure when i was a kid. That goes for a number of bands, though... Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead... I could go on and on. None are bad bands. Most of their music is quite good... but the diehard fans that insist that it's the greatest thing ever, and if you don't like it, you must be stupid... they ruin it.

                              I went through my phase. I still listen to some of the old stuff. I like the "typical" grunge;

                              Collective Soul
                              Live
                              Soundgarden
                              Alice in Chains
                              Pearl Jam
                              (some)Nirvana
                              Mudhoney
                              Sonic Youth
                              Dinosaur Jr
                              Candlebox
                              Bush
                              Temple of the Dog
                              STP
                              L7

Stuff like that. Mike, i think you linked me to Gantobarn once when we were discussing Jersey bands, lol.

This new age stuff is kinda weird. Scott Weiland going from STP to Velvet Revolver. Chris Cornell and RATM forming Audioslave and Chris' solo-project. And now Zach De La Rocha has that One Day as a Lion thing. I miss the old days, lol.
