There are coilovers for the CB that cost that much too.
The thing is, we have lots of cheap knockoff parts. BMW owners can and will usually pay for the quality parts, so there's less of a market for knockoff crap. A newer BMW owner isn't going to run $50 ebay coilover sleeves.
But yeah, they generally cost more to modify, repair, and maintain. Well worth it if it's within your budget... I'm doing alright for myself, but I have other priorities when it comes to my money, so a BMW would be more of a drain than I'd care to take on. My next car will be a Cadillac, and I won't be doing much to modify it. The CB will get all the modifications.

I just looked into the 335i earlier today. I can get a first year for about $22,000 with a manual transmission and 75,000 miles.
I'd LOVE a BMW someday... but I'd buy it new, with a warranty... and sell it before I have to worry about fixing anything out of my own pocket. That, or I'll get an E30, because they're much cheaper to fix, maintain, and upgrade these days.

They just don't want to fix it after 100k!
My old calculus professor had an e30 (or maybe it was an E28...) with 350k on it... and the original clutch JUST went (he said he'd have gotten another 50k out of it if he didn't loan the car to his friend that didn't know how to drive stick!)
BMW makes great cars, but like any machine, they DO break, and they DO have to be fixed...
