What firmware do you have ? blackra1n works on the older firmwares, not the new ones. I'm currently in the process of doing a friends ( downgrading it 3.1.3 to 3.1.2, but he has an updated baseland so he cannot have it unlocked)

I had 3.1.3, but downgraded to 3.1.2 for the Jailbreak.

Yes, I used it on my wife's phone. Very easy to do now. His latest firmware jailbreak is very, very simple.

I'm on 3.1.2 and love it. Downfall is that your phone goes to shit slow. But it's more pros than cons.

I used blackrain for 2 iphones. It wont work if your running 3.1.3 you HAVE to downgrade to 3.1.2. I have the 3.1.2 firmware for the 1st gen iphone if you need it ( I couldn't find it worth shit then i found it in my old itunes folder lol.

You need to download some other tweaks to get it running more efficient. Downloading blackrain and installing lots of flashy programs that tweak the springboard takes up system memory and this causes the slowdown.

Remember the iphone wasn't meant to multitask and use quick boss menus.
3rd party programs allow it. The phone comes with 128MB RAM standard but if you do use boss programs, activate the springboard mem option so you can see your RAM fluctuate. When you see your RAM go under 20MB this is when it's a good idea to use the skull icon and "kill processes" this will free you about 25-30 so megs and have your phone running faster again until you load more Apps. When you get under 18-12-9MB etc. this will cause some programs to be butt slow or even cause them not to load like Safari. This is why sometimes when you go into a program and it immediately backs out, this was most likely a memory issue. There is a daemon program in cydia that gets rid of unecessary startups until you "use them" I found this works great on my 2G and 3G phones. I keep a constant 32-40megs of free RAM. On the 3GS phones RAM is doubled so the slowdowns aren't even noticeable at all even with so many springboard apps loaded.

Deev. You will lose everything unless you make a backup of your programs etc in iTunes. If your phone is currently jailbroken, you can use apptbak and save your current jailbroken apps. (NOTE this will not save them in iTunes) this will only make a photocopy of your jailbroken apps so you don't have to "hunt" for them after you install new firmware.

Blackrain is a good program to use and dummy proof way to jailbreak your phone but if you want to do other things like change your bootlogo, partiton sizes etc. snowBreeze is a good app to try in expert mode.

GeoHot a iphone hacker has announced he has found out a way to get past apples encryption for 3.1.3 for the unfortunate new bootrom people who bought their phones late. I'm glad he's waiting on the release.... probably until 3.2 or 4.0 comes out... if he releases it now Apple will just plug in the exploit again.

I recommend using SnowBreeze if you want to update to 3.13 (note this only works with 2G and 3G phones not the 3GS. If you use cydia, it's a good thing to keep a copy of your ECID of your phone so if you accidently screw up, you can restore it if you are downgrading firmware.

Yes I agree with you about the led on the storm Warudakumi....Ive let texts and missed calls go unnoticed for extended periods on my iphone when I get doing things cuz I forget to check and its usually on vibrate so I dont have the audible alert....rarely happened with the storm

Ive broken my iphone with blackrain before and it is cool and you can do and get some cool shit with it....but I reset my phone back to stock...I dont mind paying a few bucks for an app if its actually worth it....ive spent maybe 30 bucks in the app store and I have pretty much all the apps I need....plus games like madden 10 and nfs shift.

I run 3.1.2 and jailbroke my 3GS, using Blackra1n/Cydia. Great thing
I also have thousands of IPA files and use a program to easily import the apps to the unit. A lot of the apps will suck the memory out of the phone but they're fun to try. Right now I have so many apps, games, etc that I use the category app to put everything in folders. (ran out of screens and its easier to organize things).

Currently only two issues that I'm trying to solve.

1. Youtube videos + wifi + 3GS = fail. I think this is a known issue, haven't had time to research into it; ie - spend 4 hours reading online. (http://www.townseller.ca/showthread.php?t=4497)

2. I would really really really like to get NES games working. I have the games, but its just a matter of finding a reliable NES emulator. There are many out there, I was hoping to find a free one. I spent a month trying to figure this one out as even some you buy are crap (freeze, controls, etc). I really just want it for Maniac Mansion

But everything else I love. 5 icon row feature, gif backgrounds, all the games (go monopoly & who wants to be a millionare is hard), music related things are cool. I'm not much into the changing of my theme, i do see that there are tons of them available to download. Police Scanners are cool too, GPS apps, and the list goes on...
