So the police are finally going to be driving a Taurus, huh?

      Just like Robocop.

I'm gonna miss the Crown Vic, though. That was an icon! GM didn't do so well with the FWD Impala for a police car... Ford shouldn't follow suit. Though it will help Dodge!

I have to look up this new Caprice now. I wonder if it's going to be related to the G8. GM said that the G8's archecture (aside from what it shares with the Camaro) won't be carried on once Pontiac is offically done.

        The Caprice PPV

I think Ford may win in the styling category.

Still not great. Honda get's 300hp from N/A V6 engines, and Ford can only pull off 365hp from a V6 and TWO snails?!?

pop those two turbo's on a V6 Honda and you're probably pushing 450hp
Audi was doing about 270 with the twin turbo S4. The Ford will at least have torque from the decently sized V6 and turbos. Being the "eco-boost", they're looking to make V8 power with V6 efficiency... not really making a roaring sports car.

I'd like to see what they can do with a sports car, though. Maybe bring back the Cougar, Thunderbird, or Falcon name... with a performance-oriented twin turbo V6 AWD. Price it in line with the Evo and STi, and see where it goes. I bet it would sell.

I used to DESPISE Ford. Now, I would have to say that out of all the American automakers, they seem to be making the most appealing cars.

i dont think cops are worried about trying to catch anyone anymore because its just a little percentage now that actually runs from cops. They need more efficiency and better features in safety. This is what i heard from a buddy of mine that is in law enforcement. who knows.

That's very true. And most that do run are not chased. A high speed chase can be more harmful than simply letting the guy get away for the time being.

"ECOBOOST" is nothing more than marketing bullshit.

A Taurus weighs around 4300lbs with all wheel drive and VERY quickly drops into the low teens for MPG when given the stick. Just like the V8's it is SUPPOSED to more efficient than.

All this smaller boosted engine = more MPG is bullshit. It helps the car look better in the EPA test, but in the real world, which is what really matters, the MPG either sucks compared to what is on paper, or the driveability suffers (such as with GM's new 6AT's which run for top gear ASAP, and as often as possible).

The S4 is another case in point. On PAPER it is rated better than the TL SH-AWD 6MT, but in the real world, not only does the Audi generally NOT meet its EPA numbers, but it actually only performs similarly to slightly worse than the same TL, which actually approximates its EPA numbers. Why? Because the EPA test doesn't really reflect an engine in boost. The Audi is a few 10ths quicker than the TL, but the TL is much larger (although about 150lbs lighter), but it also has 30 more HP and 50+ extra lb-ft of torque.

You will see the same stuff with VW's boosted engines, GM's, BMW's and anybody else's. But hey, it looks good on paper, and that is all the government really cares about.

Having said that, I don't think FWD or AWD is honestly going to hurt this car that much. We have quite a few FWD cars in police duty around here, and anymore, there is no real reason why the mission would dictate RWD. Frankly, a FWD Impala probably handles better than a RWD Crown Vic anyway. They also don't do much pushing of cars, and the body on frame thing seems to no longer be a big deal, as the Crown Vic is the only one left in that category.

Besides, most precincts will probably opt for the NA V6. The Impalas do 0-60 in around 8-8.5 seconds, and you can't really outrun the radio, so the extra power is pretty much moot anyway.

Very true. In the old days, when the police would get involved in a high speed chase, powerful cars were important. Now, like you said... it's hard to outrun the radio. The police could be on Vespas if their radio communication was good!

I think it's more of an image thing, though. A police car is a large RWD vehicle.
