I bought heavy rain yesterday for my PS3. and OH M G.
it is a very unusual video game, in the sense that its not typical at all.
The simplest way to describe it, is a choose your own adventure book. I mean any game is a choose your own adventure thing, but this is in a sense that each action you take, deeply impacts the rest of the game and its ultimate outcome.
its VERY non linear, and most times, it felt like it was happening in real time.
The game is very consuming, just like a good movie that sucks you in. You embrace yourself in the plot line and characters.
I beat the game in 12 hours. One sitting. I had never done that before in my life with ANY video game.
You play as four characters, Ethan Mars, Norman Jayden, Madison Paige, and Scott Shelby. Each of which are involved with the case of the "Oragami Killer"
A series of murders befalls this town (I think it was detroit?) where police would find bodies of adolescent boys that were drowned in rain water. When the protagonist of the game, Ethan Mars' son disappears, is when the game really begins.
You play as each character, trying to solve the case of the oragami killer. Its very interesting because you gain the knowledge of each character. So what one character may know, the others don't.. and you use that hidden knowledge and apply it to other scenarios with the different characters. It turns to be a very valuable skill, and if you dont pay attention, you could royally eff up a characters situation.
If you make decisions in matter that carry the consequence of killing that character, the game doesnt end. that particular plot line continues on with the other characters. I've only played the game once and have only one outcome of apparently very many.
I became very attached to the characters, because in a sense, they are me. There are even little things you have the choice to do. Whether its sparing some ones life, or how you treat your child. You dont have a lot of time to commit an action, so you do the first thing that comes to mind. So these really are your actions being played out in the story. So, in another sort of, dimension sort of way, you are these people. You end up getting riled up by seeing the consequences of your decisions.
All in all, its a very addicting and very fun game. when you try to analyze it, it seems very complex. but as you 'just play' it all makes sense.
The game basically depends upon how far you'd go for some one you loved.
Graphics: Very similar to Playstation Home. Very good detail, but lacking some times. Its a pleasant game to look at (especially madison paige during some scenes ) but i think it could have been done better.
Music/Sound Effects: The music is AMAZING. It draws you into the game that much more.
Playability: Its not free roaming like one would suspect. Despite the fact that it is non linear, it is very straight forward. Its not confusing, or even hard. It all depends on the player.
Controls: Its very awkward at first, getting used to the gestures and motions you have to perform with the sixaxis. But once you get the hang of it. its pie.
Fun Factor: I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
All in all, its an amazing game. It's one where it should definitely be played in some ones life time. I encourage every one to check it out. I bought it. But I suggest some one to AT LEAST rent it.
It's like a dramatic, suspense filled crime drama movie. The ending, which I dont want to spoil, is a DEFINITE twist.
Check it out!
