I ALMOST blew my H22...man I was lucky

I was coming back from school just now. Driving on the Freeway at like 80mph. I had to pass like 3 cars to get off at my exit. So i shifted into 4th and gunned it. I was going it must've been like 95-100, and then when I wanted to shift into 5th. I STUPIDLY went into 3rd! OMG, my engine felt like it was going to fall out the bottom...my car made a huge jolt. I was spinning the engine at about 7k in 4th when I shifted, so idk how high it went put it definitely went past the 8k on my BB6 cluster.

Luckily, when I did shift into 3rd, I caught it at like 8k, pushed in the clutch, and I think it freewheeled til like 9k. But I freakin' scared the shit outta myself.

Everything seems fine....the idle is normal, I don't hear any weird noises, nothing's leaking. But I did notice my Temp gauge is right at 1/2 now instead of being slightly below 1/2. Could that be due to the cold weather and me using the heater on full blast?

Damn. I need to stop driving like that when I'm dead tired (worked 9 hrs busting tires and went to a evening Statistics class for 1.5 hrs)

Would a weighted knob really help w/ shifting? or at least knowing what gear i'm in? I've been really thinking about getting one, but if it won't, then I think I should learn how to shift better first.

You're lucky it was a 4-3 shift, and not a 3-2 shift. Most people that make that mistake (2 instead of 4) blow up. I made that mis-shift once, and I was VERY lucky that I didn't do any damage. A few former staff members have done this and not been so lucky!

That's when I switched back to my stock shifter. The short shifter was notchy, which contributed to that screw up.

Now honestly, did you REALLY felt the need to pass the cars?

I assume was not patient enough to just go easy and smoothly to exit off the freeway?

I've misshifted in my old EG, with stock D15. Revved up almost that high, and it was fine for another 40k, before I sold it, never any issues.

Just need valve lash adjustment afterwards. That wasn't quite the same. But no bottom end issues.

Who knows OP, keep a close on it.

i mishifted mine ripping on a bridge and i watched the needle goto 8k on my f22. needless to say it lost compression at 27k miles. the valves were fine though :shrugs:

Yeah I've got the Lude 92-96 shifter in there right now, so I should be better off than a lot of other H22 swaps out there regarding shifting feel, but I guess judging by this mishap, i'm still a newb at driving stick (learned Aug 09' basically when i did my 5spd swap)

yeah I was DEAD tired, I really should've waited, I was already going at a fast pace in the fast lane (farthest left lane) but the guys in the slower lanes were keeping up w/ me! In a Corolla for god's sake haha; I had to make a move. I shoulda paid more attention.

I hate myself after a mis-shift. I've only done it once in the CB. I felt so bad

Wow was it that long ago that you did your swap? Damn seems like not long ago to me.

Anyways if its still running fine you should be fine. My buddy misshifted to like 3rd at 100 when he got his 06 Si, caught it at 9000 rpm. Still runs great 6 months later.

If it was fucked up, you would know it.

A weighted knob won't do anything. Proper shift technique and perhaps some Corsport shifter bushings would help.

how robust is the bottom end of the H22A? can it take 8k or rather 9k once in a VERY blue moon? This is honestly the first time I've ever done this. And I hope to never do it again.

I checked all my ESP mounts and they seem to be holding up fine. Nothing looks out of the ordinary except that temp needle being at 1/2 instead of at 1/3.

What else should I be on the look-out for though? For those that have done something as stupid as this? any warning signs? I'm seriously shitting bricks right now, hoping my baby's ok.

yeah, I was staying under the radar, being embarassed I drove an AUTO H22A lol. But it turned into a "real" car in Aug' 09 when I converted to the darkside.

Well, I know I really shouldn't be telling you this, but I made sure VTEC still worked by gingerly driving into the 5k territory lol. Just to hear it engage once, then I was nice....drove the rest of the way home shifting at like 2500, dragging my tail in embarassment
