in some states tickets come with so many points. Normally 2-3 but sometimes like 5. If you get over 12 points in jersey you lose your license.

Points are assigned a numeric value based on the seriousness of the offense. Some examples of infractions and the corresponding points include:

Failure to keep right at an intersection: 2 points
Improper turn at a traffic light: 3 points
Improper passing in a no passing zone: 4 points
        Tailgating: 5 points
Leaving the scene of an accident where personal injury occurs: 8 points
You can find the complete list of offenses and points on the MVC site or by reading the New Jersey Driver’s Manual, Chapter Seven: Driving Privileges and Penalties.

Wow, it's 12 in Jersey? Well, maybe I won't be losing my license. I thought it was like 6 here in MI, but I keep hearing 8, which means I may actually be able to keep my license. I'll have to look it up. I have seven as of today...And I'll only be 19 this year. Time to smarten up. I need to start driving more responsibly starting today.

Things are so different in other states. Every time I tried to fight a ticket, I was still found guilty and they added court fees onto the citation amount. I've never seen anyone getting less points for a higher fine, well at least in California. I guess they are just stricter in CA on everything. I think in Cali, 3 tickets in one year and your license is suspended. Or 5 in 3 years. I honestly can't remember for the life of me right now, it has been so long since my license was suspended.

To the OP. Sorry to hear about your predicament. At least you don't live in Cali. I couldn't drive for 6 months when my license was suspended. (I technically had a driver's permit for that time).

On the real though, I think I may be one point short of having it suspended, so I might be good after all.

Okay, I found something, and I am not going to lose my license, however I will be paying a $100 MI drivers responsibility fee. That's on top of my $110 fine due to the ticket. I don't know if they are going to mail me a bill or what, but I'll find out when I go to pay the ticket. I guess.

Here is the information I found...
According to the Michigan Secretary of State, all new Michigan drivers, regardless of age, are placed on probation for a minimum of three years if they have not been previously licensed.

To successfully complete your probationary period, you must drive the last ten months of probation without a ticket, an at-fault crash, or a suspension of your driving privileges. If one of these events is entered on your driver record in the last ten months of probation, your probationary period will be extended until you can complete ten consecutive months of driving without an incident.

Each traffic violation posted on your driving record during probation will result in being contacted by the Secretary of State. If your driving record shows unsafe driving behavior, including speeding, stop sign violations, and accidents, you may be required by the SOS to undergo a driver assessment reexamination. At a driver assessment reexamination, a restriction, suspension, or combination of both may be imposed on your license.

After you successfully complete probation, the Secretary of State will continue to monitor you closely for two more years. This period of time is called post probation, and you will be subject to a driver assessment reexamination if you have nine or more points and an alcohol-related ticket or crash, or other at-fault crash.

Another important point to consider is that points placed on your driver record during probation or post probation are not automatically erased when probation and post probation end. Points remain on your driving record for two years from the conviction date.

If you accumulate 12 or more points on your driving record, you will be required to attend a driver assessment reexamination, regardless of whether those points were issued during probation or post probation.

When you accumulate 7 or more points there are more sanctions placed against you under the MI Driver Responsibility Law. The Driver Responsibility Program calls for monetary sanctions for drivers who:

                            * Accumulate seven or more points on their driving record (Category 1 Offenses)
                            * Are convicted of specific qualifying offenses (Category 2 Offenses)

Category 1 offenses are for moving violations and include speeding, improper turns, and following too closely. The Driver Responsibility fee is based on the number of points on the driving records, with a minimum of seven points required before a fee is assessed. The fees begin at $100 and increase by $50 for each additional point above seven points. Thus 9 Points is $200.

Drivers assessed a fee under Category 1 will be assessed only once per year. Category 1 fees will not be assessed in any year in which the number of points on a driving record falls below seven.

Certain offenses are classified as “qualifying offenses” (Category 2) and carry their own Driver Responsibility fee independent from the number of points on the driving record. Drivers convicted of qualifying offenses will be assessed a Driver Responsibility fee of $150, $200, $500 or $1,000 for two consecutive years. The amount is determined by the relative seriousness of the offense.

                            For example:

                            * Drunken driving or operating while intoxicated (OWI) - $1,000
                            * Reckless driving - $500
                            * Drove while license expired - $150

You will need to find out from the MI Secretary of State your exact penalties for receiving tickets and for accumulating 9 points during your probationary period.

Also found this! I get to keep my license until I get 12 points, then they can only suspend it if I fail a MI drivers reexamination! So I'm good. Phew!

The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) states that under Michigan law, some traffic violations are civil infractions while others are misdemeanors or felonies. Depending on the violation and how it is resolved, you may be fined, referred to a special program or, in the most serious situations, sent to jail. In most cases, if you do not take care of a traffic ticket, your driver license will be suspended.

Each time you are convicted of a traffic violation, you will have to pay certain court fines and costs. In addition, points may be posted to your driver record. Under Michigan’s point system, each traffic violation has a point value, which is set by law in the Michigan Vehicle Code. Points are placed on your driver record only after you have been convicted or found guilty of or responsible for a civil infraction. Points placed on your driver record remain there for two years from the date of conviction. The Secretary of State cannot set aside a court conviction or the points for it.

The Secretary of State's Office decides when to suspend or revoke a person’s driver's license in Michigan through a process they call a Driver Assessment Reexamination. The Department of State may conduct a re-examination if there is reason to believe you are unable to operate a motor vehicle safely because of health reasons or for violating the restrictions on a driver’s license, crash involvement, or an unsatisfactory driving record. If you are under probation or Graduated Driver Licensing, you may be required to attend a driver re-examination after only one or two violations. The Driver Assessment re-examination process determines your ability to safely operate a vehicle and if any licensing controls should be imposed. Licensing controls may include restrictions, suspensions, revocations, or a combination of these actions.

After you have accumulated 12 or more points within a two year period you can be required to go through the driver re-examination per Michigan law. Also if you have received tickets while on probation you may have to go through this process. All new Michigan drivers, regardless of age, are placed on probation for a minimum of three years if they have not been previously licensed. So if you are a new driver it is not points that make you have to go through the re-examination process by just receiving traffic tickets.

At the conclusion of your driver assessment reexamination, your license may be unaffected, or it may be restricted, suspended or revoked depending on a number of factors. License restrictions allow you to drive under certain terms and conditions that will be stated on your restricted license. A license suspension means that your driving privileges are taken away for a determined period of time, ranging from days to months. A license revocation means that you must wait one to five years before you are eligible to reapply for possible re-licensure. If your license is restricted, suspended, or revoked, you will be given your appeal rights and licensing reinstatement information.

So if you get a total of 12 or more points within a 2 year period in MI you may have your license suspended depending upon the results of your driver assessment reexamination. Also keep in mind that there are monetary penalties for accumulating too many points on your MI motor vehicle record (MVR).

Michigan has enacted a Driver Responsibility Law to deter potentially dangerous driving behavior. This Driver Responsibility Program calls for monetary sanctions for drivers who:

                              * Accumulate seven or more points on their driving record (Category 1 offenses)
                              * Are convicted of specific qualifying offenses (Category 2 offenses)

Category 1 offenses are for moving violations and include speeding, improper turns, and following too closely. The Driver Responsibility fee is based on the number of points on the driving records, with a minimum of seven points required before a fee is assessed. The fees begin at $100 and increase by $50 for each additional point above seven points.

Drivers assessed a fee under Category 1 will be assessed only once per year. Category 1 fees will not be assessed in any year in which the number of points on a driving record falls below seven.

Certain offenses are classified as “qualifying offenses” and carry their own Driver Responsibility fee independent from the number of points on the driving record. Drivers convicted of these qualifying Category 2 offenses will be assessed a Driver Responsibility fee of $150, $200, $500 or $1,000 for two consecutive years. The amount is determined by the relative seriousness of the offense. For example an operating while intoxicated (OWI) conviction comes with an assessment of $1,000 while driving with an expired license is only $150.

Failure to pay, or arrange to pay the Driver Responsibility fee will result in an indefinite suspension of a driver’s license until full payment is made. Fee assessments apply to both licensed and unlicensed drivers. As with other suspensions, a reinstatement fee of $125 is required before the license is restored.

So while a driver re-examination is required after 12 points in 2 years in Michigan other penalties such as the driver responsibility fee can be assessed when you accumulate 7 or more points.

go to the DMV, and ask for a history of your driving record, it'll cost $3 and an extra $1 for every page
in these x pages you'll find your WHOLE driving history, is just a matter of adding up all these points, in FL 12 in 3 years is 6months, and 24 is 1 year

                                also

whenever an officer stops you, if he issues you a citation you can ask him how many points you have in you record

if its more than the suspended amount, he'll ask you if you knew (you allways say no) and he'll take your license, he'll issue a citation (driving w license suspended w/o knowledge) and if he's generous he'll wait for a buddy to come pick you up, if not your car is getting towed

a suspended license is something you dont want, tickets can always be fought,
thats why you get a SHIT ton of lawyer and attorney letters in the mail whenever you get one
be scared whenever you stop getting them
