They make a surprising amount of difference to the tone that you produce. Make sure you remember to wind it back after using it every time otherwise it will lose it's shape and therefore its tension. Especially if it's a cheap one.
my dominant strings were incredible.. the sound from the setup still gives me goosebumps!

guys...a bow on a guitar...not a cello...cello's are overpriced, and until I am financially able to blow nearly 10k on a musical instrument...well let's just say I most likely will never ever own a high quality cello.
Now putting the string on my guitar...might could do that. We'll see how it sounds...once I get some rosin.
I made an attempt on the steel and electric guitars, BARELY got even a hint of sound on the acoustic...nothing on the electric, guess the rosin REALLY makes that much of a diff. But I expected that from what I've read anyway, "they" say without rosin I won't get any sound.____

my payments were very affordable, i remember that.
and yes, rosin is key! youll see, its grippy as shit.
when we had the luxory of using school equipment( bows and such) we used to rosin up the bow real well and the rub it on someones neck like we were playing our cellos lol.

well I asked them but they only finance through yahmaha and apparently it's like 20+ % interest rate...not good. They have a 1/2 for 700 and a slightly lower quality 3/4 for 560 something...I'll just save up for that. They do have a 4/4 for 1200 but for now I'll settle for the lower quality ones.
And...yeah my electric...forgot about the wammy bar...just kept pulling that fucker up when I went to tune (raised the action all the way) so that was a no go.
Then I used some oak to fab some custom saddles and nuts for the acoustic...still wasn't right. Cello's have the neck at an angle and the bridge is pretty far away from where the strings mount (in relation to the guitar)
on a cello it's like this
string--bridge---tailpiece
---------{}----|
guitar
string-----saddle-bridge
--------------{}-|
pics (not my guitar)
you can see the difference here
guitar...see how close that is?
so when I made the saddle taller to get the strings off the fret board more (the body got in the way of the bow) it was so close to the strings that the strings actually snapped my custom saddle in half...they had lots of leverage as they bent sharply...on the cello the bridge is far away so there isn't a high amount of sideways pressure on it...just downwards.
plus the neck being angled back helps get the string off the body, making it so you can hit the strings with the bow...on the guitar they are pretty close the the body.
Oh well I can play the E strings pretty well I'll have to save for one, my wife thinks her aunt has one they don't use so we'll see, I might get to borrow theirs...I don't want to buy one just to lose interest...I'm sure I could sell it for what I bought one for...though the music store has a mark up so maybe not.Last edited by bcjammerx; 10-30-2009, 03:02 AM.____
