    Beware...BHEM.EXE/BHIM.EXE/Backdoor.Jupdate VIRUS

I was getting new XP themes off this website, and as I am clicking I get this pop-up, I accidentally click and all of a sudden firefox shuts down, and IE doesn't work either. So, I'm like, wtf? I run virus scan, Symantec by Norton, and it finds it, but this commie piece of shit has glued itself to practically 10 directories @ this point. It won't f'in delete!!! I call my comp friend, he's a big uber nerd, and he fixes it. Did some safe mode, regedit thing. Anyway, watch out, he claims it could be deadly to a hardrive over a period of time.

That's whats weird rebels. Norton oWnz all usually, this one however, snuck passed norton, hidden in another virus, which was quarantined, but apparently this one got out somehow, and attached itself, hence removin it in safe mode.

antivirus programs stop viruses when the name is executed, they can sneak in many different ways but AV progs usually don't notice them until they attempt to execute

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

Don't take my wisdoms entirely as fact as I never wrote any AV software, but in my experience the basis of an AV is to have a list of names. These names are programs/files/etc that are known to be threats or potential threats. The AV program sits and looks at every program/file/etc that is "touched" by the computer. If that name is in the list it blocks it and alerts you.
That is why its so important to keep your AV updated to protect yourself against new threats. And if you use AV progs like norton and let your subscription expire, it will not update anymore but will still protect you using its old list. Better than nothing, but if you aren't willing to pay for it you should stop using it and switch to a free AV prog like grisofts AVG Edition.
Now modern AV programs like norton come with a big-ass list of extras as well. But I'm not getting into all that right now.
Recent AV progs incorporate 'heuristics' which is an algorithym that looks for programs/files/etc that are not in its' list but have characteristics of viruses/threats. Their effectiveness is at best as effective as a placebo, as I've never witnessed them protect against a true threat.
The best way to protect yourself is to leave your AV and firewall updated and running and use good common sense. Most threats originate from visiting irreputable sites and downloading stuff from people you don't/shouldn't trust. However even if you do this you can still get them from bad e-mails, as I almost did a couple months ago. *NOTE "ALMOST"* Don't open anything you don't 100% trust.
My bro's computer gets infected every other week, but its entirely his fault. He shuts off the AV and firewall almost every time he uses it. He never updates either. He always clicks 'yes' or 'allow' without reading the warning/note. He doesn't practice good browsing. Like not practicing safe sex. Very similiar lol.
