The number of cars that actually are able to use all of their 500 whp are miniscule compared to the cars that can't even put 300 to the ground without burning through third gear. But yeah, 300whp for a J isn't something that's impossible to think of. Hell, the newest releases have 300 from the factory.

The reliability point is spot on though, however the powerband on those engines isn't exactly what the Honda scene is used to having. The Civic and Integra crowd are used to high revving, zippy little motors. The J isn't that at all! Compared to say, a B18, the J is like a big block chevy. It has a ton of power, but it's just laid out in a dramatically different way than the B's, D's, and K's.

You can't even close the stock hood on it. You might as well start swapping in VQs and VR6s.

I think you have not really driven the J series much.

It is very much a Honda motor through and through. They LOVE the redline, and in the case of the 3.0 and 3.2 liters, they have an 86MM stroke (same as a K20) which means that if a traditional Honda enthusiast were so inclined, they should have no problem getting them to 8K or higher. The J series absolutely LOVES to rev, and rev high. Even in long stroke form, they are not revving much lower than the VQ35 and 37 HR which redline at 7500.

I can tell you from personal experience that the J series with dual stage IM's feel like they want another 1,000RPMs when the smack the rev limit at 7100.

And, with it, you get a plateau flat torque curve from just off idle to just shy of redline. Of course, all of this is also with the engine optimized for emmissions, warranties MPG, and quietness. Open them up, and have fun.

Also, for the record, one of the nice things about this particular swap is that you wouldn't need low gearing for good acceleration. While that is fun, it is noisy and less fuel efficient in many cases. Because of the power to weight ratio of this swap, and the power to torque ratio, you could run much taller gearing, and get better MPG. For the record, our 2006 Accord EX-L V6 ROUTINELY gave us somewhere between 33-36MPG on the highway and was usually in the mid 20's city. It weighed 3400lbs empty and was an auto. Put that same powertrain in a car that weighs almost 50% less, with a manual, and you would have unreal MPG potential, without sacrificing speed or responsiveness.
