Do what you want. An old car is a project. It takes time, money, and patience.
A new car is an investment.

I own a new car and two old cars. The new car is transportation. The old cars are my hobby.

I would get a new car if i had a chance. I'm looking at some 03 tl-s but I'm reluctant due to the tranny issues. Those can be had for under $8000.

I think the tranny issues were corrected by 02, weren't they?

I get mixed reviews on the web, they claim some 03 had the issue. I'm close to swapping my civic for one as we speak, im just reluctant. I might just bite the bullet and do it this weekend but get a full check up on it.

old car better for no car payments... say your payments are 330 a month for a new car... is you spend 330 a month on your cb7... then eventually it will be nicer than the new cars :P would you rather have a nice 10,000 dollar car you hooked up to the style you like? or a brand new 10,000 dollar piece of shit, that you cant modify at all or you will void your warrentee

Please, Leave me some feeedback on my ride ^CLICK ^CLICK ^CLICK

You can get an entire suspension bushing kit for $100 and thats a poly kit. Bearings? like wheel bearings? thats not horrible hard to change. a shop will press them on if you bring the hubs to them. transmissions can be near perfect if the owners were nice to them. Interior is easily re-upholstered or replaced and has nothing to do with the car besides comfort.
That's alot of IF's and money. Well, alot of money to a 17 year old, which the OP is.

In reality, if you don't want to work on a car here and there, get a brand new hyundai accent for <10k and don't ever drive fast.
Driving fast is irrelevant. I can drive fast in a hyundai just as well as I can a cb7. I bet many hyundais built now are close to if not faster than a stock cb7.
Of you don't mind getting your hands dirty and don't want a car payment, fix your car until your income can get you a car you can't afford now. Just remember, any car you have will need work. would you rather have a car that you know nothing about and just fell out of warranty when it does or a car with a near 20k member community that will help you fix yours when something needs fixing?
CB7tuner might have 20k registered, but I'd bet that less than HALF that post regularly, people such as yourself, me, deev, d112, sublime, etc.) and those forum members wont do you much good fixing your car if you don't go out and do it, which some will some wont. So I guess I don't see your point.

Fuck, i couldn't hope to do more than an oil change alone until i found this site and started learning. Now im secure enough to try and build my own engine. and thats in less than a year and a half.
Congrats. Drive your car where you want. MOST of these cars though are not what they were in their prime. Things WILL start breaking. Your honda is NOT invincible. Take one decent hit, it's totaled. Few hundred rpm too much, blown motor. Both of mine I had 3rd gear synchro issues when I got them. I'm sure all don't but I bet a lot have had some kid trying to be fast and furious and miss 3rd a few times. Shocks are blown on most by now and not replaced. It's hard to find a GOOD cb7. There's plenty ACCEPTABLE ones but most could use some work, and by the time you make one as nice or reliable as a slightly newer car, it would have been more cost efficient and easier to just get a slightly newer car, and there is no arguing that point. OBVIOUSLY there are exceptions, but as a general rule, and especially if the op is going to college, it's not wise to keep a 235000 mile accord with a weak engine, worn suspension (i'm assuming it hasn't been replaced) and god knows what other problems when he said he could buy a newer car (honda or not) when he's 18.

OP-you asked for opinions, and you have mine. My vote goes to newer car. I don't care what badge is on it, but I suggest a newer car. Keep the CB at home and toy with it when you can, but don't put all your eggs in its basket.

I guess you only offered two options, 1. new car 2. h22

But I just gotta try and rep the F22. I'm with Wed3k, fix it up.

Turbomaxx makes some decent points and I respect his opinion, but in my experience CB7s are very reliable and very cheap/easy to fix in most instances.

Where do you live? Generally if you can find a performance shop that specializes in Honda/Acuras (we have two in our area) you can get even the tricky repairs done for significantly less money than you'd pay at a normal shop or the dealer.

working on/modding cars is fun...IF you have the resources (cash, location, tools) to do it.

If you do not then you really must think about your future. Regardless of the make/model, a "project car" is what it is. People tend to try and make a project car also a DD, and that can work if said car is in good shape.

The problem with a 16 year old import for a project car is that even though it may be well built...it's still super old.

                              1. safety ratings are not as good as newer cars
                              2. suspension will need complete over haul
                              3. interior is not as nice/clean/good smelling as newer cars

etc etc. but most importantly are the safety issues. Newer cars are...generally...safer.

I myself modifiy my DD, but only because my engine is is great shape, no smoking, great compression. If the tranny or engine were to go...I'm not so sure I'd spend ALL that money...just to get a 16 year old car back to 16 year old running conditions if you have a spare DD and this is your purely for pleasure/can sit for a year if need be (as with my supra) project car then do so...let it sit...get the car that will reliably get you to school/work operating. Be that by fixing or just buying a newer car.

Project cars are fun, but they are not reliable...being 18, I'm assuming you don't have your own house with land that YOU own, you don't have a place to store a project car, and you may not have all the tools required.

To me the answer is simple, leave the car with the tired engine because that is not a priority, you NEED a reliable car that will not break down on the side of the road either because you did something new (engine swap) or because it's just old...and making you late for work (again), or miss a final exam.

But that's just me...you gotta plan for the future...and project cars don't come until later in life.
