Utah Man Pays $82 Fine in Pennies

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Manti man has a penny for Sanpete County's thoughts. About 8,200 of them, actually.

Grant Petersen withdrew that many copper coins from his bank and delivered them in a bucket to pay an $82 fine he got for driving with a burnt-out headlight.

Court officials are apparently not amused, and have asked Petersen to come back in and offer a more "acceptable" form of payment. They say state policy allows clerks to reject unusual forms of payment, and it's going to waste county resources for someone to count all that change.

Petersen says he doesn't plan on honoring that request. He says money is money, and U.S. law provides that coins are legal tender.

    That's too funny...

Reminds me of the one about the guy that ran a red light and got his picture taken by one of those intersection cameras and got the ticket along with a picture of him runing the light in the mail... so he photocopied the money for the fine and sent that to court... and being the no sense of humor types that they are, they sent back a photocopy of handcuffs...

My all time favorite... although the Utah guy is a close second...

some guy in a neighboring town bought a corvette a few years ago with the pennies he had been saving for years..the car dealership took them as it was a good publicity stunt.

its like nothing in the world. definition of relaxation.

i did that at school.. they started making us pay a dollar if we were gonna park w/o a permit... the last like 2 weeks of school. I brought all pennies, and since they had nothing but their pockets... they werent very amused. They had an announcement that day saying that you couldnt pay in pennies. So i brought nickles the next day.

I've done this before, i paid $3.00 toll with Pennies.
But that was like 2 years.
Now they have a sign that says "No Pennies".
