This a bullshit situation to begin with.
Cops responded as they should have, and when the person got out of line, they were arrested, as they would have been in ANY case. But for some reason, due to the color of his skin and his position, the perp believes he should be exempt from such behavior. Isn't that kind of like what they have accused all of the prestigious white people of doing for 200 years?
Obama should have just kept his mouth shut. He wasn't there, he doesn't have the info, and he frankly damaged his self proclaimed neutral, unbiased, forward looking position. Obviously, he isn't as unbiased as he claims. His statements are very clearly a reflection of that.
This is just like Sotomayor trying to claim neutrallity, in the face of all of her myriad biased and bullshit comments.
1) What would they have said if the responding officers were black, and the same thing had happened?
2) What would have happened if the person mentioned at the end breaking the bike lock with tools had been a) white or had b) gone unquestioned and the bike been stolen?
If the police are blantantly out of line, then they deserve what they get. But clearly, we are starting to get the point of reverse racism, and this is a VERY clear indicator of that. If someone is at my place of work or school picking bike locks with tools, that IS suspicious behavior, and they SHOULD be questioned on it. Period. It isn't like they arrested him, or did something illegal, they confronted him, as they damn well should have. I don't give a shit if the fucker is purple. He needs to be confronted. But because he was black, and the officers were white, we now need to have a racial review of policies to make sure we aren't hurting any overly sensitive feelings? Give me a fucking break. This particular incident is seperate from Obama, but he is perpetuating the cycle of the problem. Had the officers NOT confronted the guy, and the bike been stolen, there would have been an outrage over the stupid police and their failings as an institution and why are we paying them, etc.
Does anyone find it odd that all of the officer's black co-workers and supervisors have no problem with him? Does anyone find it odd that a racist person probably wouldn't get along with his co-workers or supervisors who were black? Would a racist person have conveniently tried to save Reggie Lewis' life?
Does anyone find it odd that the police had no idea who Gates was prior to him producing ID, which is precisely why they asked for it? Rather than just provide it, and let them do their job, which is to make sure nobody is there who shouldn't be, he had to go into some fucking bullshit tirade and try to turn it into something it wasn't. The police have a LEGAL right to see your ID. How did they know that the other people in the house weren't under duress, and told to cooperate for fear of something happening, especially in a prominent person's home? It wouldn't be the first time that had happened. How are they to know he was who he said he was? They were called to the residence to respond to a potentially threatening situation, and it is their DUTY to make sure everything is as it should be. When Gates started to get irate about it, it became a problem. Of HIS creation. Period. Had they NOT done their job, and something had been up, they would have been skewered for not responding properly because they were racist. They respond to the call, do their job, conscientiously and correctly, and what do they get? Skewered for being racist. Catch my drift?
