Interesting how a black President moves us back 20 years in race relations.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090723/...lar_disorderly

This a bullshit situation to begin with.

Cops responded as they should have, and when the person got out of line, they were arrested, as they would have been in ANY case. But for some reason, due to the color of his skin and his position, the perp believes he should be exempt from such behavior. Isn't that kind of like what they have accused all of the prestigious white people of doing for 200 years?

Obama should have just kept his mouth shut. He wasn't there, he doesn't have the info, and he frankly damaged his self proclaimed neutral, unbiased, forward looking position. Obviously, he isn't as unbiased as he claims. His statements are very clearly a reflection of that.

This is just like Sotomayor trying to claim neutrallity, in the face of all of her myriad biased and bullshit comments.

    1) What would they have said if the responding officers were black, and the same thing had happened?

    2) What would have happened if the person mentioned at the end breaking the bike lock with tools had been a) white or had b) gone unquestioned and the bike been stolen?

If the police are blantantly out of line, then they deserve what they get. But clearly, we are starting to get the point of reverse racism, and this is a VERY clear indicator of that. If someone is at my place of work or school picking bike locks with tools, that IS suspicious behavior, and they SHOULD be questioned on it. Period. It isn't like they arrested him, or did something illegal, they confronted him, as they damn well should have. I don't give a shit if the fucker is purple. He needs to be confronted. But because he was black, and the officers were white, we now need to have a racial review of policies to make sure we aren't hurting any overly sensitive feelings? Give me a fucking break. This particular incident is seperate from Obama, but he is perpetuating the cycle of the problem. Had the officers NOT confronted the guy, and the bike been stolen, there would have been an outrage over the stupid police and their failings as an institution and why are we paying them, etc.

Does anyone find it odd that all of the officer's black co-workers and supervisors have no problem with him? Does anyone find it odd that a racist person probably wouldn't get along with his co-workers or supervisors who were black? Would a racist person have conveniently tried to save Reggie Lewis' life?

Does anyone find it odd that the police had no idea who Gates was prior to him producing ID, which is precisely why they asked for it? Rather than just provide it, and let them do their job, which is to make sure nobody is there who shouldn't be, he had to go into some fucking bullshit tirade and try to turn it into something it wasn't. The police have a LEGAL right to see your ID. How did they know that the other people in the house weren't under duress, and told to cooperate for fear of something happening, especially in a prominent person's home? It wouldn't be the first time that had happened. How are they to know he was who he said he was? They were called to the residence to respond to a potentially threatening situation, and it is their DUTY to make sure everything is as it should be. When Gates started to get irate about it, it became a problem. Of HIS creation. Period. Had they NOT done their job, and something had been up, they would have been skewered for not responding properly because they were racist. They respond to the call, do their job, conscientiously and correctly, and what do they get? Skewered for being racist. Catch my drift?

No... Incorrect. They have a legal "right" to have you identify yourself. You do not need an id. Only time you legally need to show a id is if you are driving.. We don't have to show "papers" to authority.....YET.

Normally I don't like discussions like this... politics and race separately are touchy, and combining them is asking for trouble.

Since it's you, Scott, I'll leave this in your hands. If this gets out of line, delete it. You know how.

Racism will never fully disappear. But it can be subdued. Every time an issue like this happens, it just brings more attention to the topic, which is usually negative.

They have the right to VERIFY your ID. If you don't show them, they have other avenues. It is one of those things that is not expressly required by law, but they have ways around it.

Also, I should clarify, there are two seperate rants contained in one.

              1) The backlash on Gates, when police were called to his house to assess a potential burglary situation.

              2) Harvard's decision to review everything based on a guy getting questioned for trying to use tools to break a bike lock.

And this had better stay clean and an topic, or it is gone.

There won't be a race war, because any such things will be removed.

However, you have to admit that it isn't going to be beneficial for the overall relations when it goes down this way.

Yes indeed it is rather a very touchy subject. I honestly think that its all a deliberate scheme to seperate great minds alike with ignorance, fear and other methods of subliminal torture to get ahead by controlling the minds of the masses.

Aswell as killing anyone who seeks to unite everyone as a people just because they seek a higher plane of understanding. Most of the time people in power dont like that..... heh watchout lol.

Yeah, because the minorities here were certainly oppressed.

The problem is that they are trying to turn it into something that looks like they were.

Once he identified himself and showed he owned the property. That was it.. They should of left

They arrested him after the fact. They arrested him to teach him a lesson.. DC or what he was charged with is almost always a bs charge and is almost always thrown out in court.

I wasn't there... You weren't there... I don't feel it was racist but I believe there was misconduct.

I don't think it will go that far if everyone can be open minded to anothers point of view. I had a big argument on an employee forum about this at my work (Best Buy) and i think it's a load of crap. he was found inside of a house that just had a call about a break in. Regardless of whether it was his house, someone apparently thought someone else broke in.

When the cops showed up the asked him to come outside as they should have because they aren't supposed to go into a house that has been broken into, which they thought i was, unless they are certain there is not immediate harm in doing so. He refused to come outside and refused to identify himself at first. after the police supposedly "refused to identify themselves" he went ape shit and started screaming. When they identified him they were outside getting ready to leave when he came out after them screaming at them about racist shit, and how its all because he's "a black man in America" which is total bullshit.

At least thats what i got out of all the reading i did the other day. about 3 hours worth actually. if the old man was white and the cops were black, the out come would have been the same just no big story for the news to run along on.

Hey for once a moderator is over stepping his boundaries what a surprise.

Do as I say not as I do right?

Scott your clearly and obviously angry about it. Your asking us to keep it clean? How can you ask us to do such a thing when you've pretty much contradicted yourself.

You've basically been given a freebie on this thread...where as if it was only of the members who aren't mods..who put political and racial threads up face a ban and a thread lock.

                              Good show.

I agree the president should not have intervened it's a local news personally and I do share your views.

There was a reason for it...obviously the police was doing what they're trained to do.

Trust me I personally dislike people who want more than an apology..but it pisses me off even more when your thread title is on the offensive side and basically your flexing how far you can stretch and get away with stupid shit like this thread.

As I stated..if it was me or anyone else..this would be locked up in two seconds flat with 3 posts...this is already at post 15.
