I dunno if property will be as cheap in ontario....since this is where majority of the country lives Id imagine prices might be a bit higher.....but I still dont think itd be unreasonable

I used to work with a guy who bought alot of land years ago......I think he said he had like 100 some odd acres....and he said he bought it for like 15 grand.....Im sure prices have gone up since then.....but with the recession and shit I would think prices would be on the lower side.....plus I dont think deev wants 100+ acres haha

When the car crosses customs, I believe the check to make sure it's not being "imported". They want to make sure it comes for a temporary stay, and goes back where it belongs. Otherwise, it'd be simple to just drive a Skyline across the border, slap a 240sx VIN on it, and never bring it back to Canada! From what I've read, they DO keep tabs on what crosses the border.

My initial thought was to buy land just to have a "mailing address"... even if it's nothing but a couple of trees and a boulder sitting on a vacant lot. BUT, if I'm going to own land, I'd be pretty dumb not to take advantage of it and actually have a second home on it!

I'm sure the more popular areas of Ontario are similar in price to where I live now. I already own one home, so buying another one of similar worth would be a bit out of my range, and I really don't care to move to Canada to live full time! I'm not a huge fan of snow... NJ gets just the right amount for me!

I wouldn't mind getting a 1 acre lot cheap in the middle of nowhere and building a vacation cabin. Nothing really fancy, but someplace that'd be nice to stay for a week or two a year.

Ya i figured you didnt want a house to raise a family in haha.....My thought process is this.....if your gonna go through all the trouble of owning land up here....you might as well make it enjoyable and make it worth the trip.....even if you only visit once a year (to renew your insurance haha)

Yeah, that's where my mind has been going as well. I think a small cabin or manufactured home would be a good option... but probably plopped on some vacant land that I can pick up for $8000 or so. I could get the land, and in a couple years throw up some sort of living quarters. I could probably have it all done and livable for $40,000, if I stuck to modest plans and did things smart. To buy an existing, established residence anywhere worth living, that isn't in need of significant repair, I'm probably looking at $100,000 MINIMUM.

Having land to score a car would be cool... but having land AND a second place to call home, even if it's for a couple weeks a year, would be better

Every province is different with their rules. BC has pretty laid back ones when it comes to registering and driving a car here. I've had several friends from Japan with International driver's licenses buy a car and insure it while they went to school. The ones that stayed longer than 1/2 a year (student visas) swapped their Japanese license for a BC one for a nominal fee. Most of them used phone bills and stuff to prove their address.

As for land prices, like Stewie said, prices here in Vancouver are sky high. $6500 for 4 acres?? It must be in the middle of no where (which is fine if you are just coming up to relax, use as a getaway sort of thing). I live an hour outside of Vancouver in the countryside and our 5 acre land was assessed at $800,000.

Whew! Yeah, the area I was looking at was Here
                http://www.homesteadsforsale.com/bastarache.htm

That lot is already sold, but that was what I got my ideas from. I found others (even more suitable for development, but smaller) for similar prices.

That would be 12 hours or so away from me, I believe.

I kinda do this, but the other way around.

To get a DL(at least in ontario), you need some form of Canadian ID, and some bills or statements that prove your residency (cell phone bill dosent work in Ontario). The law(in canada) is 90 days or someshit like that. Ive been longer, but really, how are they gonna know how many days.

The easiest way, is to just buy it and insure it through somebody in Canada. I highly doubt they will be able to look up shit just from a ordinary police cruzer. So you could technically drive unregistered, uninsured and all that, and probably get away with it. I know your not the type to do that though. When some random shitbag of a cop that had something to prove pulled me over here, he searched me and pulled my car apart. I was in the car when he tried to pull up my info on the laptop, all he could come up with was stuff I did to my name. He tried to "verify" that my car wasnt stolen, and when he called in to check the VIN, "it wasnt in the system" so they cant get any info really, they just BS you, at least here in Canada. Also, Canadian cops(Ontario) have a lot more "rights" then US cops, that or either they're taking advantage of me because im "foreign" and I dont know their laws.

Honestly, the easiest way is to find a someone from Toronto(8hr drive, 6 if your good), and get them to register it for you in their name. Id consider doing it, but I dont have a full Ontario DL yet, and Im moving back at the end of the summer. The only problem with that is, you'll need your Passport, and youll need someone with Canadian papers to drive the car across the border.

Well, if I can get a DL with some proof of residency... I'll have land! I can show them the deed to my property, perhaps... or set up a temporary electric box so I can be billed for that.

Having someone else register it would be cool, but if I get in trouble, I can get them in trouble too... It wouldn't be fair to ask, since I don't think I'd take the same chance for someone else! Not that I'm going to do anything crazy, but what if i decided to rob a bank in this car... or it gets stolen and the thief does so... the cops find the car, and trace it back to the "owner"... instant headache for them!

Why are you "garaging" it anyways?

Lots of people register thier cars "up north" to avoid emisions tests. Guess what, theres not a huge garage there either.

If all you need is a mailing address, thats the easiest fix.
