If you could somehow figure out how to import your Skyline to SC without customs eating you alive....we dont have inspections. And getting a title here can be simple sometimes. As long as the bitch has blinkers and shit like that they dont care. Plus we have a major port here in Charleston where you can pick it up. Its worth looking into. There is also an importer in Jersey that said they could import me a complete full Pulsar GTi-R for 5000. Once again thats also something to look into.

If I owned property in Canada, could I register and insure a car there?

And yeah, I believe that about the Jersey importer... I've actually passed a GTi-R on the road here! It's actually a damn nice looking car! (granted, the intercooler was HUGE on this one...)
If it's legally registered and insured in Canada, it's 100% legal. No question about it. It'd be bypassing the US laws by having a car that's not really IN the US!
I think there's a clause in our laws where a "visiting" car can only be here for so long, though... that would be the only problem with my plan, because the nearest Canadian border is 8+ hours away from me (and I won't be affording any border properties, I'm sure!)
The area I was looking at would be at least 12-13 hours away. Not terrible, but not something I'd want to do regularly.

VIN and passing it off as one of those would be possible... but if it wasn't done REALLY well, it could be uncovered, and the car would be crushed.

I know a person staying in Canada from the US or from Canada to US can only stay 180 days without a visa. I would imagine the car would be the same as that.

Im going through the same process deev! you sneaky fawker!
My family owns property in mexico, and you can fully insure and register anyting in the world there. The even better part, I live about ten mintues from my house in Baja.
Im not sure how Canada works, but to own property in Mexico, you NEED to be a citizen(at least in Tijuana). and To register a car in mexico (having baja plates) you need to have a residence in Tijuana. So it goes like:
Mexican Citizen -> Residency -> Drivers License -> Registration/Insurance.
What I do know, deev. you're going to need liability here in the states even if its registered and has insurance in Canada.
Since I don't have a license, the car will "belong to my uncle"
Good luck! If i can help, I'd be happy to!!

I found this on owning property in Canada:
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Canadian-...n-property.htm
Judging from that Id say its fairly easy to own property here.....So what Id do if I were you is look around and find out where insurance and taxes are the cheapest and go from there.
I would assume the problem would come in registering/insuring it....Cuz like Danny said I would think youd need a Canadian drivers license to get insurance.
Look into what the snow birds do when they go down to florida for the winters.....Some of them must have cars....and I highly doubt they drive them illegaly lol
From reading that link you get kinda screwed in taxes if you buy canadian property as an american.....but apparently as long as you are owning an actual home you can furnish it (once) tax free

That would be less likely if it was under someone elses name like Danny is gonna do, since you can just say that you borrowed the car... I wonder if you can get a canadian license w/o having to get rid of the Jersey one lol.

It seems its fairly easy to get a drivers license up here.......The only problem is Im not sure if theyll try and take your New Jersey license if you go this route.....When I moved to Alberta I exhanged my ontario license for an Alberta one and they took my ontario license away.
Id like to think that if you explain you only own land up here as a vacation spot theyd let you keep your New Jersey one also.
Edit:...this is only for ontario.....it might be different in other provinces......i doubt itll be drastically different thoughLast edited by King James; 06-22-2009, 01:53 PM.
