Wtf?? Any Truth To This?

Well me and my grandparents just finished building a nice little shed in theyre backayrd...we see the neighbor about everyday since weve been building i..she smiles says Hi. goes into her house...So she gets home today to see it finished...and Decides shes gunna stroll over...And she says "Nice shed...Do you know that it has to be 15 feet away from the fence?" ASSHOLE. she sees us everyday doing this and decides to tell us Now that its not..its not too small either its 10x14. Any truth to this??

shes given us BS before. Shes ultimately Mad IMO, because she wanted the house my G-parents bought..and she had placed a Offer on it and dint get it and my G parents got it, and she had to setlle for the ugly house next door. lol

Sounds like a legit rule/law, but at the same time, ive seen houses that were like 20 feet from eachother, with a fence running between them...

Im sure its possibly true , considering that most neighbors probably wouldnt care let alone even know if this is in fact true , what an asshole though , Id say just look into it before she makes an even bigger deal about it

In VA a shed does have to be at least 15ft away from the adjacent property. It sounds legit for most places. Gotta check for your state and county.

I'm sure it is legit. Probably is here, too. My shed is about 4' from my neighbors' fence, and they don't care. They also don't care that I put in a driveway without a permit. And I don't care that the wood from a mutual tree we had taken down is all in my yard (though they're slowly coming over and taking it for firewood).

Neighbors should be cool with each other. I hate when people get petty.

The inspectors will make you move it if it's in violation of code. My dad built a small (less than 8'x8') deck over his existing front porch, basically he raised the porch floor 6 inches and extended it out a few feet to one side. The city inspector compound is at the end of his street. They literally drove by it every day he was building it. Some of them even waved at him when they went by.
The day he finished it, he's sitting on it enjoying a nice glass of iced tea and here comes the inspector to tell him that since it's more than 12 inches off the ground, it has to have permits and be inspected each step of the way, he needs to redig the footers so they can inspect them for the proper depth of concrete, etc.
Dad went to the garage, got his 42 inch cut lawn tractor and a tow chain and pulled the whole damn thing off the house, drug it around to the garage, cut the legs down to it only sat 12 inches off the ground, man handled it over the fence and now has a nice short deck off the back porch that they can't inspect. It's not even attached to anything, it just sits there, but they can't do a thing about it.

What you have to look into is what the local setback requirements are, and wether or not you have any easements. I have a 6' easement on either side of my property lines between me and my neighbors. I have like a 15' easement from the back property line. Setbacks determine how far a structure can be from the centerline of the street, or the property lines. Basically, you can build wherever you want until someone calls and complains about its placement, or a utility company needs to come on your property for repair or maintenance. At that point you will be required to move, or take down the shed.

You can however apply for a variance permit to build outside of code. Only issue with this is that it can be somewhat expensive, and should be done before doing any building, not after it's built. When applying for a variance you have to be pretty specific as to why you feel you should be allowed to build outside of code. For example, my basement steps are 37" wide. Code is 36". I need to rebuild my stairs so that they will allow for the drywall thickness and finish trim. They will be 34" wide once all is said and done. After explaining this to the planning and zoning committee I have been granted a variance permit.

There are a lot of things that need to be looked into before you just put up a structure, especially in town. Sheds and garages usually have to be built with similiar construction methods and appearance to the primary residence. Not always, but at least in my subdivision for example. Setbacks and easements are probably the most important guidlines to follow. You should be able to access your county's website and get this information from there under the planning and zoning section. I know this is all probably too late, but I hope I've helped.
