starting school soon . any advice

We'll after graduating high school I took a year off from school. Now I'm going to go back in the fall. My plans are to get my Associates Degree in Applied Science at the community college by my house, then move to NYC and get my Bachelors Degree in Criminilistic Forensic Science. I'm going to be taking night classes so I can still work during the day. For the first semester ill be taking 3 classes , ill be going to school monday thru thursday 6:30pm-9:45pm.

Throughout high school I always excelled at school except when it came down to doing homework. I would get A's in all class work and tests but would end up barely passing the class due to not doing my homework. I need to start applying myself to school this time around, I'm ready to get my life together.

Anyone has advice for my freshman year in college?? I know it will be a challenge especially for me since I'm going to be going to school and have a fulltime job at the same time.

I was the same way, A's in highschool, but never did homework or had to 'try'. Then I got a slap in the face going to a university... idk how a community college will be but what I've learned is that highschool A work gets you a C in college.

Just take away all distractions for a few hours everyday. No internet, tv, music, anything, and do homework. If you don't have any homework (righttttt lol) then read into the subject farther on your own or do practice questions.

1 semester I got $1800 back after paying for classes and books.
              (1 scholarship, 1 grant)

The hardest part of college IMO is actually going. I had a 8am class (so I could go to work at 9:30am) and it was a PITA to get up that early.

Yeah, all my other classes were night classes so I could still work full time.

Comp I does suck. I had atleast 10 papers, and the final paper was 20 pages.

The community college I went to was significantly more difficult than Rutgers... but I feel I got a better education there, honestly. The CC route is the way to go. Not only is it cheaper, but the professors are generally there because they WANT to teach, not because they HAVE to teach to get their research funding!

Community college is like highschool, with more unsupervised responsibility, less busy work, and less social interaction. Prepare to be a nobody. The only ones that will give a damn who you are are your professors, and that's only if you let yourself be known!
You won't be living the "college life". No Animal House shit at community college.

The Associates degree is worthless. Absolutely worthless. I was a year into Rutgers when I decided one day that I felt like picking up that worthless piece of paper. They unceremoniously handed it to me in a manila folder, with a halfhearted "congrats". It won't get you diddly as far as jobs go... but having the full degree usually makes transferring easier. BE SURE that your CC credits will transfer to the 4 year school you plan to go to. You don't want to get stuck re-taking classes because they didn't transfer!
