    1994 Civic-Crankshaft pulley

I figured I'd post this here, It's not CB7 related but I need more exposure on this, this is the womans car and I need to get it rolling today. Mods feel free to move this to a more appropriate section.

So the problem was, my girl was driving it one day and she complained of a loud noise. So I checked it out. The car had somehow thrown the belts off the alt. and A/C. Weird. So I put them back on. Turned on the car and the crank pulley is wobbling like crazy. WTF. So I get it to my place, pull the crank pulley off and this is what I find.

The inside of the crank pulley is eaten away too. The key is pretty shredded.

So my question is, will it be fine if I just put another key on? I have another crank pulley to put on, and I'm going to pick up another key from the Honda dealer. I figured I'd get a key from Honda instead of the hardware store, because I don't want this to happen again.

Also, what could have caused this? The same Honda dealer did the whole timing belt service last April, right before my girl bought the car. I have Carfax records to prove this. I also changed the Alt about a month ago. I need some insight on this, this car has to work for my woman to get to school, work, etc. Thanks guys

The only thing that I could think of is that a belt was too tight, putting pressure on the pulley.

This should be in Other Automotive Technical, but since you're in a hurry to get it fixed, I'll allow it to be here in OT.

Thanks deev, Other Automotive Technical doesn't seem to get alot of hits.

Well its possible for the belt I put on to be too tight, but I did adjust it little by little till it didn't squeal, but my memory sucks too so maybe it was too tight.

Was there any play in the belt? You should have about an inch of play. A belt can squeal if it's too tight, so if it was squealing for that reason initially, and you continued to tighten it... that could be what happened.

Or it could be a defect in the crank or pulley... or something that the techs did when they did the timing belt. It's hard to say exactly...

And yeah, OA-T gets next to no attention. Let me know when you're done with this thread, and I'll move it there then. That way we have it in the proper forum for reference later on.

Well it was squealing cuz it was too loose, so I tightened it up till it had about an inch of play. I know its hard to tell what exactly happened, I just want to know if I can put another key in and the newish crank pulley and it'll be fine, can't afford for this to happen again. Well I'm off to pick up the key and other parts.

from the looks of the crank I'd say replace it, putting another key on it and pulley would just be a temp fix ' cause it will probally happen again. What motor do you have in the civic is it the d15b7. Cause those are a cheap engine to replace, or just replace the crank

Bolt probably was not torqued right, if the bolt came out.

But it looks like the keyway is FUBAR. In that case, a new crank is in order.

Yeah, the crank is damaged. A new pulley and key will still wiggle loose. There's not enough on the side to prevent the key from moving around.

A new crank is not in order. It's a 94 Civic. A new MOTOR is in order! Upgrade!

Well I got the key, I'm gonna go put it back in. There seems to be a little bit of the keyway left on the innermost part. We'll see if this works, I'll torque it down reallll tight! If it doesn't work, maybe that'll convince her to do the B-swap that I have been talking about. It's a D16Z6, not too common.

Thanks for your help guys, I'll update in a little while with what happens.

Don't overtorque it... that's just as bad, if not worse.

Look into a B series swap

i've got a d16z6 (obd-1) thats been sitting for almost two years... its actually up in your neighbordhood if you want it for parts... this is a common problem on CRV's for the crank to be junk and to have a wobble in the pulley.

send me a PM if you're intrested in that motor

Well I put it together (it was a good idea to get the Honda key) cranked it down with the impact, torqued it to 150 ft-lbs, and put the belts back on. I took it for a drive around the "block" (about 4 miles), hit vtec a few times , all seems fine.

If it does grenade again, I will be contact you about that Rob. Hell if its cheap enough, I may pick that Z6 for a spare. This motor isn't doing so hot. Leaks water from the back of the block, valves make noise, oil leaks everywhere, and now this. B-series is looking better all the time. I figure its a shame if a non-vtec motor is swapped into a car already wired for Vtec.

Thanks for all your help guys

I think a GSR swap would be good enough for her, she barely tests the limits of the Z6

That's why the B20 would be good... she doesn't have to rev too high to enjoy it
