    how to handle this...

so I got this job in a small shop. just me & the owner at some shop in the back of a warehouse center. boring as hell but its atleast a job. Im getting only 7.25 an hour . but I got a paycheck & the dude who owns the shop says he isnt taking care of the social security/taxes, I have to. I just basicly got a personal check from him as my pay.

so how do I go about paying the social security/taxes? I dont want the goverment to get on me about the taxes I should be paying back.

im pretty sure that if he is paying under the table then he probably doesnt have insurance covering you so be careful. as far as i know your supposed to take out social security as an employer but dont have to take out taxes.

he has to file it with uncle sam or uncle sam doen't know about it thus can tax you. as far as i know.

but you won't get any taxes back seeing as your not paying any.

Are you gonna get a W2 at the end of the year? I think you can just show proof of wages at tax return time and they can calculate how much you have to pay the government

I think you are right, the employer should take SS out dont have to take out taxes. This dude might not even have a business license...be careful Gus especially with those personally checks bouncing!

I work with my parents and I get payd cash. From what they tell me all I need to do is at tax time next year just calculate how much I got payd for the year and file my taxes that way. You'll end up having to pay since it hasn't been taken out of your paychecks.

its called a 1099. its the form that states you basically work for yourself this is what i made and then use that to do taxes. basically like a w2 but shows no taxes taken out

                    Dont handle it at all.

My dad did the exact same thing when i worked for him, and he did all his research on it. He just paid me cash under the table. The only thing linking me to his business was a form i signed saying that i agreed to being paid cash for work done and my employment was on a day-to-day basis and wasnt permanent nor guaranteed. I dont remember how he handled insurance. I dont think he had any. It wasnt dangerous work, so..

As for the govt coming after you, they wont. When you make less than $12k a year, you don have to file. They might wander why you dont have employment records, but if they ask, which they most likely wont, just tell them you took how much ever time off to see the world or to travel or just live at home or something.

As for SS...thats up to you. I dont know if you should take it out, or how to go about that. I wouldnt worry about it not adding up, cuz you most likely wont work there for too long.

I just say enjoy your tax-free money

Nope, but you'll have to pay them.

My financial friend said you dont have to file for taxes.

Its just like you doing him a favor and helping him run the business for free. Him giving you checks is the same as a family member giving you a check. This is just once a month or week or whatever.

He's not "paying you to work there", he's just writing you a check.

As long as there's no contract or paper saying that the checks he's giving are for work performed, its pretty LEGAL.

Like i said, its just like you doing him a favor as a friend and "helping him with his store" and his checks are his money and he's just "writing you a personal check".

Untrue. I made 6K working last summer, and had to file. I owe money.
