Agreed. Teachers are expected to do too much. At the same time, they're expected to work miracles with dated techniques.

Sadly, our schooling in this country is underfunded, and people don't seem willing to pay what it takes to really make a difference. An increased education budget was just voted down in my town... it would have raised taxes about $150 a year. I guess that's just too much to spend...

this is like a unicorn....too me
I agree with everything Mike(deevs) posted above.....it is definately being over diagnosed. When I went to school in Jamaica i had shit load hyperactive kids in my classes but the teaches knew how to deal with them so they stayed focused and learnt what was being thaught.

When I started schooling in the US all i heard was about this ADD and ADHD crap and what kind of meds everyone was on.

Medicating the kids is a cop-out and marketing ploy for pharmaceutical companies to make shit loads of cash.

If you really wanted to focus you will make yourself focus.

Personally I think I HAD this ADHD people speak of because I use to get bored every easily and drift off(still do sometimes) but I made myself focuse because I had to

          x2. it's the new fad.

I had it, severely. I took medicine in 4th grade for it. I couldn't stay in the habit of it while I was in school, one thing led to another, I just didnt take the medicine. I started to take it for 4 weeks in 6th grade, got out of it again.

I pretty much just dealt with it. Who knows what the medicine has done. I know I tried to take it again 2 years back...and it had ZERO effect on me, because I was on such a high dosage in the first place.

Well I recently went back to school and visited the psyc for add. We did about two hours of testing and determined I was adhd. I had allready known this via reading online symptoms. I was prescribed adderall. I must say the medications has done slot of positive in my life. I am much more organized and focused. No change in energy levels and only side effects i've had is decrease in appetite. Positives are I pay much better attention to people and in class. My short term memory is superiorly improved and social interaction has also increased. Only thing I don't like about the med is it's addictive properties. I don't abuse them and use as directed by my doctor. I do think Meds for add/ADHD are way over prescribed but for my own experience I feel it has helped greatly. While others that seek it for an extra edge and lie during testing to get Meds I don't agree with at all.

If you REALLY have a disorder and other methods aren't working to control it, then meds are good. However, I'm VERY against medication of all types. There are other ways to fix problems, more permanent, and less harmful ways.
