    That's BS.
They can spend $150 million on a fucking inauguration, but still suck taxes out of every US citizen?
    I want my $0.50 back.

Yes, they can, and they are. In condolance though, the inauguration is funded by the inauguration committee which I believe works like campaign funding, i.e. the $$ doesn't come from the taxpayers, or at least not the vast majority of it.

        Oh, okay.
        i didn't know that.
Makes it a little better, but still.... why the fuck would you spend $150 million when we're "in a recession"?

        I just don't understand...

Partly because it is historic, partly because they are trying to accomodate as many people as possible, which costs more money, and partly because of increased security needs.

Keep in mind that this is the first major inaugural celebration since 9/11, he is the first multi-racial president, there will be over 3 million people in attendance, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

If everyone were to be wiped out, Robert Gates would become President as he is the designated power successor tomorrow, and will be spending time in a secret location so that the chain of command doesn't fall if something terrible were to happen.

It is just a traditional celebration in the US, similar to if there were a new King or Queen coronated in England.

He hasn't done anything yet, as he doesn't become the President until tomorrow.

It is a traditonal ceremony more than anything.

SWEET! I'll hop on the next flight :P Funny thing is I could still make it.

This thread can easily fall into a political shootout but so far I'm really impressed that it hasn't. I really just wanted to share my excitement. No matter who won this is an exciting event. I'm going to hang the stars and stripes outside today. I wish I had access to a flag pole :P

It's a major bummer that it starts at 1130. It'll be 130am here before it even starts... Grr.

You mean the top 5 will be in attendance? Because SECDEF is 6th in line.

I hope we remember this in a pleasant form of history and not a national tragedy. I have to admit... I'm nervous about it.

Robert Gates is the designated successor as agreed upon by Bush and Obama.

The VP's are always in attendence as are the Presidents, as well as most major cabinet members, so yes, SECDEF is the one. He is being shipped to an unnamed military installation for the day.

The line of succession is always in place and always has been. I am sure it will be fine, but in such matters, it is essential that if something were to happen, the chain of command and system remain intact.

I really don't think there will be many issues to be honest.

yeah, I know the chain of command has been in place for a while. I dont quite understand though. Why would SECDEF be 2nd in line? How long is that in place? When will Biden be the 2nd in line?

I'm reading about the security aspects now. about 10,000 LEO's, 10,000 national guardsmen (with another 20,000 on standby). USSS counter sniper teams, undercover cops, etc. I'd love to see their plans for everything. I think it'll be fine too.
