if its a wma then itunes should convert it to mp4 but it takes up space on hard drive.

its actually AAC format. MP4 is for video.

I use realplayer as my media player, and it's easy to put songs on my ipod with that.

              Try this...

              Shut down computer
Pull power plug out of power supply
              Wait a minute or so
              Plug back in
              Start back up
              Try again!

Just remember that once you put all of your songs into Itunes, it makes the DRM copywrited and you'll need the originals to put onto a Zune or any other MP3 player. IMHO i've had other mp3 players, and I still like both of my Ipods better than anything else i've had, plus I save time (but not money) by just doing a quick search on Itunes and downloading a song in about 30 sec. Much faster than limewire.

If I have music saved on my computer in a main folder with sub-folders dividing the songs into groups, is there any way that I can get the ipod to add songs as I add them to the folders without manually dragging them then selecting them in Itunes and putting them into playlists?

yes. activate the automatic sync on itunes. It will see what has been added/deleted from the library and do the same on the ipod to match.
