Last night I went to a local Toyota dealer to look at a 2001 Honda Accord coupe priced at $4800. It had 123K, black with gray interior and appeared to run ok. My plan was to offer $4400 since it may need a timing belt replacement and either tow it home or let them charge me tax and registration fees. But, they wanted $279 documentation fees and a $695 acquisition fee along with VIN etching. Basically, I have to $1000 extra to buy the car. I left and will look for a private seller.

all dealers will charge a documentation charge. how else are they supposed to pay for titling and other fees they incure when processing your purchase. You can deny the vin etching and the other fees associated with the acquisition fee but that woulda been a good deal IMO.
