2) Don't be afraid to answer questions thoroughly. Just because it is on the phone doesn't mean that they are on a truncated time table. But be careful not to be too long winded.
3)Don't forget that they CAN tell your inflections, facial expressions etc on the phone. Don't assume that just because they can't see you means that they only pick up on what they hear. It is amazing how many people blow phone interviews because they think the other person can't tell they have a bad look on their face.
4) Be confident and yield. On the phone it is hard to hear when someone is going to talk, so there are always those periods where 2 people try to talk at the same time. Make sure you let them proceed, and wait, unless it is more beneficial for you to go first, and everyone is OK with that. Also, make absolute sure you give them a chance to finish what they are saying.
5) Study equally to what you would do for an in person interview.
I got one of my best jobs via phone (it was temporary internship) and it was the way I handled myself on the phone that got it. They told me that when I showed up in person.
Be confident, smile and be yourself. You will be fine.
Have a list of questions to ask. It gives them the belief that you're genuinely interested. Things like:
Who will be my supervisor if I am hired?
How big is the company (if you dont know)?
Where is the home office located?
Are there particular suggestions that you have for me to help improve my viability with your company?
I don't mean for you to ask these actual questions, but showing interest in the company, instead of just answering the questions gives the impression that you're inquisitive and want to "know" more. It's annoying interviewing sheep, you know?
Dress comfortably.... you don't want to stop the interview to put on a jacket b/c you're cold or something.
keep a glass of water next to you. (drink when they ask the question. not when you need to respond)
Speak clearly.
Have some answer prepared for certain questions like....
-Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
-What leadership roles have you taken?
-What sets you apart from the average person?
-What is the biggest thing that interested you in our company? (Look up
the company's morals and stuff. It should be stuff like Diversity, etc etc.)
Avoid using slang. such as gonna, wanna, ain't, etc etc.
dont drop a deuce while on the phone. no matter how much you have to go
seriously though... dont have the interview in any area where you could be interrupted. stay away from children. stay away from dogs. televisions. radios. if your on your house phone turn your cell phone off. actually, the bathroom might be a good place to go. just... dont drop a deuce.
