I'll be doing 18hrs, NJ to FL.
MY car is in tip top shape motor wise, timing belt, fresh oil ect.
So engine failure is highly unlikely (knock on wood)

      For the car I got:
-extra Altenator/AC belt (just in case)
-extra Upper and lower radiator hoses (just in case)
      -Gallon of Coolant
      -Quart of Oil
-Brand new spare tire off my Mom's 08 CRV
      -New flashlight
      -Handy-dandy tool kit
      -Road flare
      -Lighter

      For me:
-Since i have to work the day i leave, i will come home and sleep for like 3-4hrs.
      -Sweat pants
-Padded socks (yes i will be driving in my socks )
      -back support pillow
      -snacks
      -drinks
      -MUSIC !!!
      -2 goofballs to join me

I guess thats about it. Im set for the trip.
      Hope everything all goes well...
      .... GPS FTW!!
and one more thing my cruise control works, does yours?

Have a safe and fun trip man!

for me, no amount of caffeine kept me awake while driving.

one time on my way back from Chi-town, i stopped to get me two red bulls. I downed them and still felt tired. a friend that was trained as a paramedic said drinking green tea helps too but no go on that either.

Sun flower seeds was what my father and i chewed back in the day when i rode with him to stay awake. Granted you'll have to take the biggest deuce when you get to your destination but you'll be awake the whole time till you get there.

either that or having the A/C on the coldest blast you can withstand.

They trick your mind into thinking it is more alert than it is, they are good for energy, but you don't need that driving, you need alertness.

Pull over every four hours and have a quick 15 min nap. It will do wonders, and you will feel much better

that's about the distance to the ATL.

a lot of cars you see on the side of the freeway are broken down from worn distributor parts, like the coil or igniter, ect. later.

12 hours is nothing, I drive from MA to NC to visit my dad all the time.

That's actually a lot of what I did. I thought of all the crap I was going to be able to afford now that I was going to be making 35k a year.lol

Anyways, I drove LOADED up on Redbull. I also drank A LOT of powerade. Powerade goes through me QUICK, so it made me want to always pee. I can't go to sleep when I need to pee, so yea that worked well for me.

Have an unlimited calling plan. I stayed on the phone about 90% of the time I was driving. My bill was $500 that month, lol.

I only had my tools on me, no extra parts. But I did stop at TypeG's house and did an oil change.

                          Forgot one thing

Directions - PRINT detailed instructions of where you are going. Unless you've been to the area a bunch of times, you shouldn't trust yourself to remember exactly all the turns to make. One wrong turn can put you in a bad part of town where you could get jacked and killed.

                              - Check/set all tire pressures (observe that it remains, before leaving). If not, then replace tire.
                              - Bring full size spare tire with set pressure, if you have or check/set spare donut tire.
                              - Change oil & filter (bring couple extra quarts if it consumes oil).
                              - Check/change coolant and tranny fluids.
                              - Check/change spark plugs, distributor cap & rotor, plugs wires if needed.
                              - Check that brakes operate properly. Enough pad material?
                              - Check suspension entirely for safety concerns (ie. loose/worn ball-joints, replace before leaving ASAP!)
                              - Make sure car starts properly & strong. Battery OK? Starting system OK? Alternator charging properly?
                              - Wiper blades OK, if not replace.
                              - Top off all other fluids (wiper fluid, power steering, brake, clutch).
                              - Bring spare key, carry with you all times in case you lock yourself out.
                              - Bring cell phone & cell car charger.
                              - Bring maps/directions.
                              - Bring music CDs.
                              - Tow truck coverage?
                              - Bring basic tools, if case of emergency.
