we would leave at 4pm and then come back at 5 am

i was so tired once i drove back in my boxers with all the windows down...it worked

i drove from iowa to phnx az in 36hrs, key was to take short naps at rest stops and pull overs

            Start early.
I mean, like....early. Packed, gassed, caffeinated and on the road by NO later than 6.
Early morning driving is pretty painless compared to late afternoon driving, so try and maximize it.

hes not driving 36 hrs.. his trip is only 12 so naps arent necessary in this trip.

I've been on so many long distance trips ever since I got my license which was about 2 years go. I think it's just awesome to be on the roads with your friends. Before you leave make sure you check your oil, tire wear, your spare tire and brakes. Usually this isn't so necessary when you're car is brand new, but I believe you are leaving with your CB aren't you? I drove mine back from Florida where I've purchased it and although it wasn't in its greatest shape, it did the 23 hours trip with no problems. Make sure you bring a lot of fluids to keep yourself hydrated, some munchies and perhaps a pillow to put behind your back. Take a break at least every 2 hours of so. If you really feel tired, take a 15 minutes nap. That is basically to trick your system . Rolling down the window and putting loud music on to wake yourself up doesn't work. They're nothing but myths. Good music is also something you'll need not to get bored to death.

if nothing has happened to your car in the last 12 hours why would anything happen in the next 12?

                            just a thought.....

Indeed... However, the last 2 hours were most probably driven not too far away from your house. You just do check ups for precaution purposes. You don't want to get stuck half way at 6 or more hours away from your house...
