when you open your volume control panel, go to advanced, and make sure it shows everything (all devices, outputs, etc)

make sure nothing (except for stuff in the recording section) is muted or turned down al the way.

you didnt do a bios updated, did you?

are you running a separate audio card or do you have on-board sound on your mother board? if it's onboard, find the driver disc that came with your computer and use that. its possible the drivers you have arent for the hardware you have in there

I assume its onboard......Since Ive done nothing to this computer since I bought it

I have no idea where that cd would be lol....Ive moved quite a few times since purchasing this computer....i wouldnt doubt its long gone haha.....what I did do is download the drivers directly off of hps website....they said they were the original ones that came on the computer....So since it worked before it should theoretically work again....but no dice haha

OK, just to double check, make sure the speakers are plugged into the GREEN or BLACK slot on the computer.

Also, Double check the Volume control mixer and verify that the sliders are all the way up and un-muted.

Ok, for one, make sure the drivers are installed properly, do not have any conflicts (check device manager), and also make sure it says "The drivers are working properly".

If that checks out, go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices. Under the Audio tab, make sure you have your device selected as the default playback device.

If all that checks out and still no sound, for to Start, Run, and type "dxdiag" without the quotes. Under the Sound tab, click Test DirectSound. If it works, great, if not, post up what info is displayed in that window. Then under the Music tab, click Test DirectMusic. If it works, great, if not, post up the details in that tab as well.

We might need to dig into it a little more but that's good for starters.

from the Sound tab in dxdiag

post the Device Name, Device ID, Manufacturer ID, Product ID and if it is listed as a Default Device

Also post the Driver Name, Driver Version, Date, Other Files (if listed), and the Provider

"Failure at step 19" is referring to the drivers not being able to be verified properly by Windows.

Try these drivers and re-boot after installing. It looks like you have Vista, and the drivers you have installed are for XP:

                  It's version 6.0.1.5322

                  ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/softwar...-2/sp26883.exe

The driver above is from the Realtek site.

If that doesn't work, try the HP ones for XP again. Mine show a different revision date so they might work.

                        ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/softwar...-1/sp26731.exe

Your issue is driver related though.

X2, this happened to me, I had to install an older driver and then update that driver instead of installing the latest one right away.

when you reformatted the hard drive you lost the drivers to the speakers.. you downloaded the new/correct drivers and problem solved
