Ok... So I am going to visit this girl in Australia for the second time. I told her that there was no way I could go if I had to pay the whole ticket myself this because it is way too much expensive and since she wants to see me too, it is only fair that she contributes, and I'm pretty sure everyone agrees on that. I mean, I'm a full time student now and can only work 21 hours a week. I work everyday of the week. My days start at 8am and finish at 9pm. I really do everything I can to pay my dept but be able to go there too.
Anyway, she agreed to pay half of the ticket which is 1100CAD. She sent over 1900AUD. Back then, they're the rates were about 1CAD = 0.75AUD. I ended up after the transfer with 1380CAD. Later on, after I purchased the ticket, she has asked me to give her back 500AUD, which is just about 425CAD now... If you substract that from the 1380$, she only really gave me in the end 955$... Although that's not half of the ticket, I agreed to pay back when I see her. Weeks later, today, she tells me that in the end I will have to give her back 900AUD... which is now about 714.9CAD...Susbtract that from the 1380CAD, I end up with 665.1CAD that she's really given me out of that 1100$ she was supposed to. I was really mad and told her that I shouldn't pay more that 500AUD back which is what we agreed on the second time although the first time she was supposed to be giving me half of the ticket price in "CAD" currency which is very important to know.
Thenn it hit me... How could I get 1380CAD from 1900AUD? Their money was only 15% worse than our. I calculated that to get 1380CAD, their money would have had to be about 30% worse which wasn't the case. There's a 15% that's missing! Anyway, she keeps on telling me that I owe her 900AUD and that if I ended up with 1380CAD only is because XE was inaccurate and that bank rates are different... You mean XE was 15% inaccurate? How does it make sense? She then tells me that it could've just been hidden fees then... So wait a second... 317$ was bank hidden fees? I am definitely calling my bank tomorrow to clear things out and see how much they have really taken off because this is total bullshit. When she realizes I'm not as stupid as she thought I was, she just says that it could be anything but that I should've been prepared and known that there could be fees and everything... Well I don't think so. I never told her her to transfer it the way she did, I never agreed on any lame fee. In fact, knowing that I need half of the ticket cost, she's the one that should've been aware of all that. But again, I do not believ 317$ was fee. I sense some bullshit in all that. Let assume it is... Should I be paying 100% of it? Wouldn't it at least be fair to say well, we both didn't know so let's split?
Reality is that I've already accepted once to pay back more than I should've and now I am asked to pay back ever more? Does anyone here thinks it's fair? I understand it can be frustrating for her to send 1900$ so that I only end up with 1380$ because they're money suck, but is that my fault? Should I be the one punished?
This is very complicated, I don't know what to do... I cannot not give it back to her... I'll be spending almost a month there with her and her family... How can I expect to have a good time there if they all look at me like I'm a crook and we don't get along?.
Before anything, I would like to know... Is it even normal for me to feel frustrated? I mean.. Is it right to say that I'll get half of the ticket cost, to then ask me to pay back 500$ after I purchased my ticket so that I'm left with a little below half? And then after I agree... Is it right to ask for an extra 400$ to leave me with only about a quarter of the cost? How is this fair?
