Any brass knucke like object will not go through the security check point and can lead to an arrest, any concealed weapon on a belt its an automatic arrest. Mace, tazors and things of that nature will also lead to arrest.

If you are not checking luggage, get whatever you want in Thailand.
In checked luggage guns must be unloaded and locked in a hard case with a declaration form on top of it. They must be inspected by airport or local police prior to being inspected by TSA. Knives and tools are allowed in checked luggage.

*EDIT* I'm at work now, this is also allowed in checked baggage, Throwing stars and brass Knuckles. I repeat only in checked baggage NOT as a carry on.

Think about it this way. Would you wanna get popped in the face with a simple maglight? Sounds like this is your best option.

I would look into Thailand's laws on what you can bring into the country and what they let you carry. Personally I carry a knife EVERYWHERE and I have traveled into many countries with an assortment of knives. China, Italy, The Netherlans, Domican Republic and Bermuda just to name a few. I always put them in my luggage and I have never had a problem. Of course every country has a customs form that asks if you are bringing any weapons into the country and I always answer no. And they are not the most tame looking knives either.

I usually bring my SOG Flash (but mine is a tanto blade half serrated)

            And this

            and others

so as long as Thailand lets people carry pocket knives I would go that way

Tasauto, I've got the SOG Flash2 at home. I love that thing. Unfortunately, I cant carry it here because it's over 2 inches. I'm thinking about the flashlight route because it's non-lethal, you could blind someone momentarily to gain a huge advantage, and you could use it as weight for a good strike. Plus I could carry it here.

The main problem for going to Thailand is that I might not have a checked piece of luggage. Only carry on. That being the case, my swiss army knife will even have to stay home. We're going to be hiking through a lot of sand to and from various islands so I guess thats why we're leaning toward no suitcases.

Maple, you're clearly very well travelled now that you've been out of America. I wish I knew the world as well as you do. Thanks for your advice.

Items Allowed Only in Checked Baggage

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has prohibited the following items from airplane cabins and carry-on baggage but may (with some exceptions) be carried as checked baggage:

Sporting Goods: Bats (baseball, softball, cricket), hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks, bows and arrows, ski poles and spear guns golf clubs, and pool cues.

Tools: Tools greater than seven inches in length can only be carried as checked baggage. Shorter tools, such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers, may be carried in carry-on baggage. If you have a toolbox in checked baggage, make sure you check every compartment to make sure that your toolbox does not have any containers with flammable liquids, box cutters, utility lighters, micro torches, or other banned items.

if your lucky, you can find some punk shops that sell brass knuckle belt clips...looks like part of your belt....but can pop off easily
Those look ok, hook it up to your keys, or something... you think they would allow those?

Well if you are not checking a bag and you will be doing some decent hiking / backpacking / exploring stuff then the flashlight idea makes a lot of sense. To bad I can't hook you up with one of these http://www.laserdazzler.net/ I assemble them for LE Systems in my spare time. They are CRAZY.

WOW lol. Yeah, that'd turn some heads. The flashlight idea is the best option at this point. I'm just wondering what the legality of it is and if I can get that surefire E2D LED Defender on a plane. It really shouldn't be a problem but if they don't allow it, losing a $150 flash light would hurt... a lot It's under 7 inches though so it should be allowed. I just need to make damn sure.

eventhough those offer the most skull crushing potential, he said that he didn't want to carry around a baseball bat of a flashinght around.

i use a maglite personally and wouldn't feel as safe with that tiny led light. it's good for a fist packer and not much else.

when i go into buildings, i have my mag proped on my shoulder and i'm holding the bulb housing in the palm of my hand. that way if something happens, all i have to do is tap the button and daze the subject, then bring my arm down. later.
